Welcome to Naval Station Newport, just outside historic Newport, Rhode Island! In the cradle of the American Revolution, the commander of the first Continental Navy, Rhode Islander Esek Hopkins, used the Narragansett Bay as a haven for his small fleet. During the Civil War, Newport was the temporary site of the US Naval Academy to avoid the capture of its cadets by the Confederates. The base was formally established in 1869 and rose to importance in World War II where it produced 80% of American torpedos.
