Welcome Aboard

Welcome to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Since Oct. 1, 1997, Marines and Sailors have been living and working aboard the 23,000-acre facility.

Starting Out

MCAS Miramar is on the northern edge of San Diego. Directions to the air station when using any of the following major freeways heading northbound are as follows:

Miramar’s military roots began in 1917, when the U.S. Army purchased the Miramar area and established Camp Kearny. The camp was used as a demobilization center after the war, but ceased to function as a military base and languished for 12 years.

Services and Facilities

The American Red Cross in San Diego County provides emergency assistance, information on sick or deceased family members and financial assistance. The Red Cross community center at Naval Medical Center San Diego can be reached at 619-542-7400, and the Camp Pendleton center can be reached at 760-725-6877. Miramar Commands

Many U.S. strategic planners envision the 21st century to be one of cultural and ethnic discord, volatile contingencies and many veiled dangers to America’s interests. This era of uncertainty will call for an agile, crisis-response force capable of resolving a host of potential conflicts. MCAS Miramar units have answered the nation’s call in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America and stand ready to respond when future contingencies arise.

Marine Corps Community Services

Miramar offers a wide variety of family programs, counseling, recreational activities, including an 18-hole golf course, youth and teen center, three full-service fitness centers and a number of restaurants and clubs for air station personnel. A complete list of updated activities can be accessed at the Marine Corps Community Services website: The following chapter offers information about a variety of programs, fitness, entertainment services, restaurants, clubs and other recreational services available aboard the air station. All hours are subject to change.

Local Attractions

Balboa Park is home to 15 museums, various performing arts and international culture organizations as well as the San Diego Zoo. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the nation. You’ll discover internationally significant art treasures, exotic animal species, unique model trains, dinosaur fossils and mummies, world folk art, photography, sports memorabilia, rare aircraft and more. The stunning architecture in the park is the legacy of two Expositions, the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition and the 1935-1936 California Pacific International Exposition. Balboa Park is also renowned for the horticultural treasures on its 1,200 acres: brilliant displays of seasonal flowers, many themed gardens including an award-winning rose garden and a Japanese garden, rare and exotic plant species, shady groves of trees and green rolling lawns.
