Welcome Letter

On behalf of the entire command and our many tenants, I would like to welcome you to Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia. Located in Southwest Georgia, the base occupies approximately 3,600 acres within Dougherty County, and is a vital strategic asset to the Marine Corps and the nation. Whether you work or live aboard the base, or are just visiting, we are happy to have you be a part of what we do here. We at MCLB Albany are proud of what this base represents for our local community, the Marine Corps and the Department of the Navy.

The base was commissioned in 1952 as the Marine Corps Depot of Supplies. Since then, the base has gone through a number of name changes, finally settling on Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in 1978—its present name. We are one of two logistics bases in the Marine Corps. The other is located in Barstow, Calif.

The mission of Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany is to provide facilities, infrastructure, and a range of tailored support services enabling supported commands aboard the installation to accomplish their assigned missions in support of the warfighter.

We host many tenant organizations. The largest is Marine Corps Logistics Command. Another tenant, Maintenance Center Albany—a subordinate command of Logistics Command—repairs, rebuilds and modifies all types of Marine Corps ground combat, combat support and combat service support equipment, all of which keep the Marine Corps operating successfully.

The base plays a strategic role as a part of the Marine Corps' efforts in the Long War. Vehicles and other equipment damaged in Iraq or Afghanistan are brought through Logistics Command to maintenance center depots here and at Barstow, Calif. for repair and rebuild. Logistics Command also provides extensive worldwide logistics support for Marine Corps involvement in Overseas Contingency Operations.

Logistics Command's MCA has provided numerous innovative methods for overcoming combat threats, such as developing mine roller technology, installing new armor, and decreasing repair time to get vehicles rapidly to our war fighters. The combined efforts of base and tenant personnel are critical in keeping those Marines in harm's way as safe as possible.

We foster safe, clean, working and living areas here, and we want to make efficient use of natural resources while conserving energy through awareness and new technologies. We want to provide a high quality of life for all of our service members, civilian-Marines and family members. Three years ago, the base began a new housing construction project. In October 2009, 110 new homes opened, giving our families new, modern places to live. We are also in the process of renovating buildings, replacing infrastructure and constructing a new state-of-the-art barracks for our single Marines. MCLB Albany is the first Marine Corps installation to implement a landfill gas-to-energy project, one that is not only innovative, but the First in the Department of the Navy. There are many other environmentally-friendly projects currently in progress because our long-term goal is to become the "greenest" base in the Department of Defense. In addition, MCLB Albany was recently awarded the 2010 Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Award's Gold Level of Achievement for its outstanding energy program. One of the best reasons to enjoy being stationed here is the wonderful community around us. We are blessed to have the support of the surrounding counties and the City of Albany, and proud to be a part of this local area that has such a rich heritage. This is Southern living at its best and some of the most beautiful beaches are just a few hours away along the coasts of Georgia and Florida. Even though this is a small community, Southern hospitality is a way of life and this is a place you can truly call home.

There are numerous recreational opportunities in and around Albany for you and your family to enjoy. Here, you can enjoy the outdoors until your heart's content—whether it is hunting, fishing, golfing, boating or other activities.

To those assigned to the base or tenant commands, or those who just happen to be passing through, thank you for being a part of MCLB Albany, and once again, welcome!
