Gen. Maryanne Miller, commander of Air Mobility Command, and Chief Master Sgt. Terrence Greene, AMC command chief master sergeant, visited Joint Base Charleston, July 29 to August 1.

Miller and Greene visited service members from multiple squadrons across the 628th Air Base Wing, 437th Airlift Wing and mission partners including the 628th Security Forces Squadron, 841st Transportation Battalion, Naval Munitions Command, 437th Maintenance Group and more.

During their visit, Miller and Greene got a first-hand look at JB Charleston's mission capabilities, new innovative programs and how JB Charleston is taking care of service members to build a stronger mobility force.

Miller and Greene also met with several junior enlisted members to recognize star performers and encourage innovation at all ranks.

"Innovation starts at the unit level," said Miller. "Each Airman contributes to our mission and innovation starts with their visions of how we can make the job better. Those ideas bubble up [the chain of command] to us where we consider the improvements and benefits, to include how to sustain and support the idea. Not every idea will make the cut, but it is the [major] command's responsibility to move them forward."

AMC leaders were also exposed to ongoing initiatives led by Airmen to improve operational readiness and the quality of life for members of Team Charleston.

Some innovative programs being implemented on base include a summer intern program, a centralized fitness improvement program and a Child Development Center program to expand infant care options.

"Innovation isn't always a big idea that changes the Air Force, sometimes it's something little that only affects the squadron," said Greene. "Those little things are just as important. Innovation starts with the Airmen, but it also starts with leadership appreciating those ideas. Give your Airmen the opportunity to share their ideas and don't let first-line leadership shoot them down."

AMC's mission is to provide rapid, global mobility and sustainment for the United States armed forces. The command also plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian support at home and around the world.
