The Fort Bragg Combatives School hosts regular tournaments as a way to kindle the spirit of competition and allow Soldiers to build close relations with other.
Staff Sgt. Tyler Lang of Victorville, California, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division said he finds combatives tournaments a great way for him and his soldiers to build bonds with each other. He and his fellow Soldiers hoped to sweep the competition and take home as much gold as possible, he added.
"I was a referee at the previous tournaments," Lang said. "This time around I wanted to participate, and I asked my guys to come join me."
For one Soldier, the tournament had special meeting.
Two years ago to the date of the tournament, Cpt. Andrew Alterman's father passed away. Alterman, of 2nd Battalion, 325th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, said that emotional event played an important part in his performance at the tournament.
"Every time I step on the mat," Alterman said, "I can hear his voice in my head saying "I'm proud of you.'"

Light-heavy weight: Russell Ellebg
Cruiser weight: Andrew Alterman
Middle weight: Taylor Lang
Welter weight: Dylon Van-Sicknell
