NAS Whiting Field Support Services Fleet and Family Support Center

 

The FFSC should be the first place you visit when arriving on station or when you receive orders to your next duty station. NAS Whiting Field FFSC is a warm, inviting center with cordial staff prepared to help you obtain the assistance you need to get settled in and to maintain a healthy military lifestyle throughout your tour. FFSC serves as a hub for information and referrals providing culturally and geographically responsive services. The center is located in Building 3025 and may be reached by calling the front desk at 850-623-7177. A well-stocked Loan Locker is on base to provide the basics until your household goods are delivered. Military personnel assigned to NAS Whiting Field may borrow items free for up to 30 days with a copy of military PCS orders. Items available include futons; TV and DVD players; microwaves; kitchen basics like pots, pans, dishes, glassware and flatware; all sorts of small appliances; folding tables and chairs; irons and ironing boards; and vacuums. We do not carry sheets, blankets, pillows or towels.

FFSC staff are very professional and knowledgeable about programs and services available on and off base to assist with challenges associated with all aspects of a military lifestyle.

Services include a wide array of programs that offer educational classes, briefs, seminars, consultations and individualized assistance designed to educate and assist active-duty and retired military personnel (regardless of branch of service) and family members. FFSC serves singles, married, married with children and single parents. Many of the services are also provided to civil service and contract employees. Examples include: base indoctrination, hurricane readiness, Emergency Family Assistance, personal financial management, debt and credit counseling, consumer affairs, car buying, bank account management, investments, communication skills, cultural awareness, decision-making, deployment support, personal and family readiness, retired military affairs and benefits, basic and quarterly ombudsman training, relocation assistance including outbound and overseas move preparation i.e. Smooth Move, sponsor training and spouse orientation, clinical counseling, stress management, family advocacy, positive parenting, marriage enrichment, assertiveness, anger management, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR), suicide prevention, family member employment assistance and transition assistance, such as resume writing, interviewing techniques, job search and many others. Accessing Higher Education

The primary goal for this course is to prepare participants for secondary education and expose them to common obstacles experienced by nontraditional students. Topics covered include: choosing a degree program, selecting a college institution, exploring funding options and completing the admissions process.

Anger Management

Primary goals for this course are to educate participants on understanding anger, identifying triggers, discovering constructive ways to process anger, and practicing anger management techniques. Additional topics covered may include assertive communication; cooling down, acceptance, and resolution; setting boundaries and emotional intelligence.

Challenges of Flight School & Marriage

The primary goal for this course is to prepare flight students and spouses of the common pitfalls and unique challenges associated with being married to a flight student. Topics discussed include: flight school stressors, marriage stressors, communication, problem-discussion/problem-solution techniques and quality time.

Communication Skills

The primary goals for this course are to instruct participants on the basics of human communication and how to effectively use communication to excel in the workplace. An application of modern communication theories and principles coupled with workplace dynamics is also provided to participants.

Conflict Management

The primary goal of this course is to explore the five conflict management styles and review various workplace scenarios that may require various styles.

Consumer Awareness

The primary goal of this course is to provide participants with knowledge of deterring scams, misrepresentations and fraud. Participants also gain knowledge of consumer laws and resources.

Credit Management

The primary goal of this course is to teach participants to use, obtain and identify the four major sections of a credit report. Participants will also learn to identify common credit reporting errors and appropriate corrective actions.

Dealing with Difficult People

The primary goal of this class is for participants to gain the communication skills needed to de-stress all difficult relationships, on the job and off.

Developing Communication Skills

The primary goal of this course is to develop skills that effectively engage various audience members. Learners will engage in speaker-listener simulations and practice conveying messages.

Federal Applications

The primary goals of this course are for parti-cipants to learn how to obtain federal employment and decide whether federal employment is the right fit. Facilitators demystify the federal resume and educate participants on reading vacancy announcements and applying for positions.

Home Buying 101

A primary goal of this program is to educate participants on the home purchase process. Information includes special programs for financial assistance in buying and repairing a home, specialty mortgage products, the process in getting a mortgage, finding a home and determining if the home is right for you. Additional topics explored are the purchase process and sustainable homeownership issues.

Paying Your Student Loans

The primary goals for this course are to educate participants on accessing loan information, available recourses when there is difficulty making payments, various payment plans and loan forgiveness options.

Resume Writing

The primary goal of this course is to teach students the different styles of resumes and determine which style is most effective for their job search.

Smooth Move

This course is designed to reduce the stressors associated with a permanent change of station/move to another base. Topics covered include: entitlements, installation resources, housing resources, and education and spouse employment and assistance.

Stress Management 101

The primary goal of this course is to instruct participants on effective strategies to cope with work related and personal stress. Participants will learn how to identify stressors and gain strategies to effectively cope with stress.

Study Skills

The primary goals of this course is to instruct students on active listening, comprehension, notetaking, stress management, test taking and memorization techniques that prove advantageous in academic settings.

Time Management

The primary goal of this course is to introduce students to established methods for improving ability to effectively manage life’s events in relation to time. Participants will discover how to eliminate time wasters and improve productivity.
