NB Ventura Our Military Arrival

See the Getting To & Around Ventura County chapter on Page 24 for information about local airports, train service and other transportation.

The closest commercial flights land at Santa Barbara Municipal Airport in Santa Barbara, about 55 miles from NB Ventura County. One-way Roadrunner Shuttle Service between the airport and NB Ventura County starts at about $100 (www.rrshuttle.com/sba ); a taxi is much more expensive. It is far less costly to contact a base sponsor and arrange to be picked up at the airport.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is about 60 miles from NB Ventura County. One-way Roadrunner Shuttle Service between the airport and NB Ventura County starts at about $73, and taxi service carries a much higher price tag, so once again, it makes sense to pre-arrange a pickup with your base sponsor.

Burbank Bob Hope Airport is also about 60 miles from NB Ventura County. One-way Roadrunner Shuttle Service between the airport and NB Ventura County starts at $65 for a shared van.

SPONSORSHIP

Contact your sponsor with your estimated arrival time and flight information, if applicable, prior to your arrival at Naval Base Ventura County.

Sponsorship is vital to the relocation process. Don’t PCS without talking to your sponsor before departing for Naval Base Ventura County. Your sponsor will answer any questions you have about the base and the local area, make lodging/dorm arrangements and meet you upon arrival. Your sponsor will be there to help you and your family until you are settled into your new community.

If you have not been in touch with a sponsor and your departure is nearing, contact your gaining unit prior to arrival to ask for sponsorship. The Fleet & Family Support Center (805-989-8146) can help new members get in touch with their sponsors.

CHECK-IN PROCEDURES

New members must check in at the Quarterdeck (open 24/7) in Building 1 on Sixth Street, Point Mugu. The 24-hour phone number is 805-989-7209.

From the Quarterdeck, each person will be directed to the proper sections to complete reporting in. Be sure to bring documents and paperwork needed for in-processing as well as enough uniforms for several days. Newcomers will need to check in at the housing office in the Welcome Center to complete a housing application and secure housing and a temporary meal pass. Call 805-982-4571 with specific in-processing questions.

After new arrivals report to their shore commands, the next stop for them and their families is either the NB Ventura County Welcome/Visitors Center, 1000 23rd Ave., in Port Hueneme, the central support center for all NBVC military and civilian personnel and residents (805-982-5037) or the Point Mugu Welcome/Visitors Center, 311 Main Road (805-989-8146).

Built much like shopping malls, the Welcome Centers house the Personnel Support Detachment, housing office, Fleet and Family Support Center, Personal Property, Sato Travel Office, Homeport Liaison Office, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and the American Red Cross.

From in-processing time until departure, the Welcome Centers are a one-stop shop for help: updating ID cards and DEERS records, maintaining pay records, helping with on-base and off-base house hunting, and assisting with deployment planning and household emergencies.

The Welcome Centers themselves are open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, but hours may differ for some agencies within them.
