Regional Medical Center Earns American College of Surgeons Bariatric Comprehensive Center Designation Palmdale, CA January 6, 2016 - Patients seeking surgical treatment for severe obesity and its related conditions have a high-quality choice for receiving treatment at a nationally accredited program that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care in the greater Antelope Valley area.Dr. John Yadegar, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Director at Palmdale Regional Medical Center today announces its bariatric surgical center has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).The MBSAQIP Standards, outlined in the Resources for Optimal Care of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient 2014 ensure that bariatric surgical patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. The accredited center offers preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for their severely obese patients."Weight Loss surgery is a proven approach to improving health and longevity while also incorporating healthy eating and lifestyle changes," says Dr. John Yadegar. "We are extremely excited and proud to work with a dedicated group of staff who have nurtured and contributed to the accomplishment of this accreditation. We are excited to bring our expertise to all our patients who desire to have weight loss surgery at a center of excellence."Palmdale Regional Medical Center's commitment to quality care begins with appropriately trained staff and the leadership surgeons who participate in meetings thoughout the year to review its outcomes. They seek continuous improvement to enhance the structure, process and outcomes of the center. To earn the MBSAQIP designation, Palmdale Regional Medical Center met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for continuous quality improvement. The standards are specified in the MBSAQIP Resources for Optimal Care of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient 2014, published by the ACS and ASMBS."Quality helath care is a top priority of Palmdale Regional," says Richard Allen, CEO of Palmdale Regional. "We have shown our success in achieving quality goals through earning an "A" in Hospital Safety from the Leapfrog Group through two complete cycles, a Silver Award in Heart Failure Care from the American Heart Association's 'Get With the Guidelines' program, and now an accreditation as a Bariatric Comprehensive Center under the MBSAQIP program. We couldn't be more proud of Dr. Yadegar and our bariatric team for achieving this designation."After submitting an application, centers seeking MBSAQIP Accreditation undergo an extensive site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon, who reviews the center's structure, process, and clinical outcomes data. Centers are awarded a specific designation depending on how many patients it serves annually, the type of procedures it provides, and whether it provides care for patients under age 18.In the United States, around 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health, and the numbers continue to increase. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditoins that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks. Working with ASMBS, the ACS expanded this quality program for bariatric surgery centers so that it can assist bariatric patients in identifying those centers that provide optimal surgical care. Palmdale Regional Medical Center Earns a 2nd Cycle ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety in Leapfrog’s Fall 2015 Hospital Safety ScorePalmdale, CA November 4, 2015 – Palmdale Regional Medical Center has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety once again by being awarded an 'A' grade in the Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital. This A grade is one of the most meaningful honors a hospital can achieve, and one of the most valuable indicators for patients looking for a safe place to receive care. The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, nonprofit hospital safety watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.PALMDALE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER recognized with Silver Award for heart failure care      PALMDALE, CA 2015 — Palmdale Regional Medical Center has received the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Silver Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation’s secondary prevention guidelines for patients with heart failure.            Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure is a quality improvement program that helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. Launched in 2005, numerous published studies have demonstrated the program’s success in achieving patient outcome improvements, including reductions in 30-day readmissions.            Palmdale Regional Medical Center earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the patient, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies. These would include ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta blockers, diuretics, anticoagulants and other appropriate therapies. Before patients are discharged, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.
