A water pump is one of those parts that, when failing, needs to be replaced immediately. The water pump's role is to ensure the coolant keeps moving through the engine block, hoses and radiator and maintains an optimum operating temperature. Without it, your car would overheat and you would be left shopping around for a new engine. A water pump will give you warning signs of wearing out. Since these signs share symptoms with other bad components in your vehicle, you need to have this properly diagnosed and confirm the failure of your pump: Coolant leak: A worn-out hose, gasket or radiator may also leak coolant. However, the water pump leak, green or sometimes red, will usually show up under the center of your car. Engine overheating: A stuck thermostat or clogged radiator could also cause your engine to overheat. A whining, high-pitched sound, sometimes a grinding noise, from the front of your engine: Such noise can be created by a bad accessory pulley or a slipping or misaligned belt. Tips to Increase Water Pump Service Life Premature failure of a water pump can be avoided by following some simple guidelines: Replace old, worn-out coolant at the recommended car manufacturer service interval. Fix engine overheating problems as soon as possible, as it will damage the seal and impeller inside the water pump. When replacing a water pump run by a timing belt, always replace the timing belt at the same time, especially if the water pump is leaking. A coolant-contaminated timing belt has a reduced service life. Furthermore, a worn-out timing belt may break and damage your new water pump. In most models, the water pump and timing belt have about the same service life period , so you'll save time and money by doing both at the same time. The water pump is the heart of the cooling system. It is the reason your engine stays cool and the cooling system works well. You may be waiting in a drop-off line, handing your highschooler the keys, or sending your college student across the country. No matter what phase of life you’re in, you want your car to be in tip-top shape to get everyone where they need to go, on time & safely! 1. Vehicle Cleaning & Organization: -Cleaning & organizing are not just for your mental health, but also for your safety. Did you know that loose items in your car become dangerous objects in the event of an accident? -Make sure to ride with your school supplies & extracurricular gear safely secured. -Unpack all of the summer stuff & Remove all of the seasonal Items -Investing in a trunk organizer for all their extracurricular equipment can be a lifesaver! -Kids should put backpacks in the trunk, not at their feet. Anything that cannot be stored in the trunk should go on the floor, against the back of the seat in front of you. 2. Educate Your Drivers -Making sure your household drivers are educated on precaution & procedure in the event of trouble on the road is very important. Here are a few of the things they need to know: -What to do in the event of a car accident -What to do with a dead battery (because we all forget to turn off the lights every once in a while) -How to change a tire - When & how to call roadside assistance -What is in the Emergency Kit 3. Check Your Fluids, Tires, & Brakes! -Check your oil & fluid levels -Look over your tires – Insert a penny into the groove of your tire's tread. Lincoln's head should be upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread depth is less than 2/32 inch, which means it's time to replace those tires. -Pay attention to those brakes – Your brakes will alert you if they need replacing by emitting a high pitched screeching sound. They are purposely designed to make this sound as a warning. We know there is a lot to do to get those kids ready for school, so save yourself some time & bring your vehicle into the professionals at Michigan Auto & Tire #backtoschool #michiganautoandtire #mechanic #woodbridgeva
