The American Red Cross assists military members and their families during emergencies and provides service programs and volunteer opportunities to the base community. Fairbanks’ primary Red Cross is the Tanana Valley Chapter, located at 725 26th Ave., Suite 201, Fairbanks, AK 99701. The Fairbanks Red Cross office can be reached toll-free at 888-345-HERO (4376). The Fort Wainwright office is available to all branches of military service and is located at 1024 Apple St., Fort Wainwright, AK 99703. For more information, call 907-353-7234. In the event of an emergency, such as illness or death in the immediate family of the service member or spouse, call the Red Cross at 877-272-7337. The Red Cross worldwide communications network can verify the situation and provide information to military authorities for planning emergency leave.

Financial assistance, counseling, information and referral services also are available. Red Cross assistance is confidential. The Red Cross coordinates and trains adults and youths as volunteers who support numerous base offices and activities such as the clinic, legal office and library.

Health and safety education courses such as first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and childbirth preparation are offered on base. Instructor training is available in these courses. For disaster relief assistance to clients, volunteer duty members or spouses can call toll-free 877-272-7337 for immediate assistance.
