Dear Friends:
As Mayor of the City of Virginia Beach and wife of a retired Coast Guard captain, I welcome you to our city. Over the years we have been blessed to have so many military families come and be a vital part of our community. We owe so much to them all and are pleased to have them be such and important part of our city.

As Virginia's largest city, we have almost half a million residents and are home to five military bases. I am delighted that so many of our military residents choose to retire here after completing their service.

We have so much to offer families besides sun surf and sand. Our city has growing businesses, cultural events and attractions, countless recreational opportunities, fines schools and neighborhoods where people look out for one another. Whether tourist or neighbor, we offer so much for everyone to do and see year round.

We have some of the greatest beaches on the East Coast along with the chance to kayak through 121 miles of inland waterways. You can fish and sail on the Chesapeake Bay or explore Back Bay or First Landing Park. The Virginia Aquarium is rated as one of the top 10 aquariums in the country and with the opening of the Sandler Center for the Arts. We have one of the premier cultural venues in the country offering a multitude of events for any taste. As always, we offer an endless choice of restaurants that cater to every taste.

Besides our wonderful public schools, we offer opportunities and choices for continuing and higher education for all ages through community college, four-year undergraduate and graduate level degrees.

I'm not the only who recognizes what a great place Virginia Beach is to live.

We were chosen as on of the "100 Best Communities for Young People" by America's Promise Alliance, headed by Colin and Alma Powell. FIT PREGNANCY magazine named Virginia Beach as on of the best cities in America to have a baby. American City Business Journal named Virginia Beach "America's Least Stressful Metropolitan Area," based on air quality, low crime rates, stable employment and strong income growth.

I know and love this city and its people and I know it to be a wonderful place to work, raise a family and live a full and enriching life. It's a place where our citizens can feel safe and be a vital part of community that welcomes you with open arms.

We welcome you to Virginia Beach and invite you to be a part of our family. We cherish the long and lasting relationships we have had with the military over the years and the men and women who serve. We are proud to have you with us and hope you too will find Virginia Beach to be a "Community for a Lifetime."

Sincerely,
Meyera E. Oberndorf
Mayor
