Naval Station Great Lakes | Support and Tenant Commands
Navy Region Midwest
Commander, Navy Region Midwest (CNRMW) was assigned its own flag officer in October 2006—a change from the previous arrangement which had Commander, Naval Service Training Command (CNSTC) serving as the Zag for both organizations. The establishment of Navy Region Midwest represents the most significant alignment of Naval shore activities under a commander at Naval Station Great Lakes in more than two decades. NRMW was provisionally established in October 2003 as part of the Navy's restructuring of shore-based installations under Commander, Naval Installations Command. It encompasses Navy organizations in a 16- state region.

NRMW provides coordination of base operating support functions, which includes providing expertise in areas such as facilities and land space management, exercise coordination, housing, environmental, security, family services, bachelor quarters, disaster relief coordination and logistical concerns. NRMW is also regional environmental coordinator, working in concert with the EPA's regional planning agent.

The 16-state area of responsibility includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, North and South Dakota, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Navy Region Midwest includes two other Navy installations; Naval Support Activity, Crane, Ind. and Naval Support Activity, Mid-South, Millington, Tenn. NAS Crane, Ind. is home to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, which carries out Research and Development, munitions support for the Army and Navy and a variety of other technical mission and mission support tasks. Naval Support Activity Millington, Tenn. is home to the headquarters for Commander Navy Personnel Command, Commander Navy Recruiting Command and more than two dozen other commands and activities.

The alignment of shore operations under Commander Naval Installations Command is helping the Navy focus on issues most critical to sustained success. It is being accomplished by implementing best business practices and processes to ensure the Navy is operating as efficiently as possible while improving current and future fleet readiness.

Marine Air Control Group 48(MACG-48)
Marine Air Control Group 48 (MACG-48) Headquarters, along with two of its subordinate Squadrons (MTACS-48 & MWCS-48), is located aboard Naval Station Great Lakes.

Comprised of five units located at sites in seven states across the United States and totaling over 1,200 Marines, MACG-48 belongs to the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Forces Reserve.

MACG-48's mission is to coordinate all aspects of air command and control and air defense within the Marine Aircraft Wing. Additionally, MACG-48 provides the command and staff functions for the MACG Commander when deployed as part of the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) of the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF).

MACG-48 was activated on Sept. 1, 1967 at Glenview, Ill. From the late 1960s through the 1980s, MACG-48 participated in many training exercises, honing their combat skills, refining their tactics, techniques and procedures in order to keep abreast of the ever changing C3 community.

From August 1990 to April 1991, MACG-48 Marines deployed in support of operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, augmenting the active duty component. In August 1995, MACG-48 relocated to Fort Sheridan in Highwood, Il. After five years in Highwood, the Group Headquarters moved again to its current location aboard Naval Station Great Lakes.

MACG-48 has mobilized over 1,400 Marines in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom to support the Global War on Terror. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast of the United States. Once again, Marines from MACG-48 were called upon to provide command and control expertise and long haul communication support in support of disaster relief efforts. Today, MACG-48, along with its subordinate units, stands ready to mobilize in support of any contingency.

Federal Health Care Center
North Chicago Veterans Affairs Medical Center signed an agreement with the Navy to integrate Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes (NHCGL) and the North Chicago VA Medical Center into a Federal Healthcare Facility opening in fiscal year 2010.

In October 2003, the first phase of VA and DoD resource-sharing relocated inpatient mental health services from (then) Naval Hospital Great Lakes to the North Chicago VA Medical Center. In June 2006, renovations to expand the Medical Center's Operating Room and Emergency departments were complete. Upon completion, all of the Naval Health Clinic's inpatient care, including pediatrics, emergency services and operative services shifted to the VA Medical Center.

The last phase of the partnership is a $130 million DoD construction project to build a new Federal Ambulatory Care Center (FACC). In October 2010, the merged facilities will become the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center.
