On behalf of all the Marines, Sailors, civilians, their families and
myself, welcome to Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany!
During your military career, many of you may never have heard of
this base which occupies approximately 3,600 acres in Dougherty
County, tucked in the Southwest corner of Georgia.
Commissioned in 1952, and then known as the Marine Corps Depot
of Supplies, the base later took on its present name in 1978 as one of
two logistics bases within the Marine Corps—the other one is located
at Barstow, Calif. The mission of the Marine Corps Logistics Base
here in Albany is to provide facilities, infrastructure and a range of tailored
support services enabling supported commands aboard the
installation to accomplish their assigned missions in support of the
Warfighter. Though we host a multitude of tenants, the largest tenant
is the Marine Corps Logistics Command, which also includes Maintenance
Center Albany where maintenance/rebuild work is performed
on Marine Corps ground equipment.
Albany is nestled in the heart of Southwest Georgia, and is just a short
drive from the beaches on the Atlantic coast of Georgia, the mountains
of North Georgia where the Appalachian Trail begins, or the panhandle
beaches of the Florida Gulf Coast. The city provides an array of metropolitan
amenities, while continuing to preserve the rich heritage and
natural resources of the area. You can enjoy the thrilling sport of a quail
hunt on one of the many gorgeous southern plantations, explore the
nearby the Okefenokee swamp, enjoy a night of arena football or a
South Coast League professional baseball game, visit the wildlife at
the Parks of Chehaw or visit the Flint RiverQuarium, which is a oneof-
a-kind adventure featuring a unique blue-hole spring with more
than 100 mysterious creatures! Whether assigned to the base or one of
its tenant commands, you will become part of a community that
reflects a rich heritage of enjoying our many social, civic and professional
opportunities. This is the "real" Georgia, where the beauty of
our countryside is still intact and southern hospitality is a way of life.
Once again, welcome to Albany!
