The Alaska Army National Guard’s two major units are the 297th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade and the 38th Troop Command. The 297th BfSB encompasses counterintelligence, long-range surveillance and tactical exploitation of national capabilities. The 38th Troop Command is composed of the public affairs detachment, civil support team, contingency contracting team, regional training institute, ground-based midcourse missile defense battalion, military police battalion, aviation battalion, recruiting and retention command, medical command, and an airborne infantry company.
The Alaska Army National Guard also serves the communities of Alaska with extensive Innovative Readiness Training exercises and outreach programs such as Arctic Care, a recurring health care program; Operation Santa Claus, an Alaska National Guard yearly community relations and support program that provides toys, clothing, books, school supplies, fresh fruit and sundaes to youngsters in communities across the state; and operation Newtok/Mertarvik, a village relocation project.
