Naval Base Ventura County is a major aviation
shore command and a major Naval Construction
Force mobilization base providing airfield, seaport
and base support services to fleet operating forces
and shore activities.
NBVC activities support the joint missions of
the Department of Defense (DoD). The location
provides valuable airfield, seaport, railhead and
base facilities in support of multiple tenant operations
by all branches of the military, including the
Reserve and Air National Guard.
NBVC is composed of three operating facilities—
Point Mugu, Port Hueneme and San Nicolas Island.
NBVC Point Mugu has real-time control of all
air traffic within its coastal area, which permits
dynamic reallocation of flight paths in order to
assure safe, secure, unhindered military operations.
This enables the 36,000-square-mile Pacific Sea
Test Range to operate totally unencroached. This
range has been a major asset in the test, training
and operational readiness of the majority of the
subsurface, surface and aerial weapon systems in
the DoD strategic and tactical inventories.
NBVC Port Hueneme is the only deepwater harbor
between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is
the only Navy controlled harbor between San Diego
and the Puget Sound. It has been a key mobilization
facility for WWII, the Korean War, the war in Vietnam,
Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Operation
Iraqi Freedom. It is also a homeport supporting the
current DoD logistic pre-positioning strategy.
Currently, the harbor and its railhead support the
storage and deployment of heavy construction
equipment, and the airfield supports the deployment
of Construction Battalion personnel.
NBVC San Nicolas Island has a development
and training facility established by the Missile
Defense Agency in support of joint operations. The
facility allows the firing of anti-ballistic missiles
against missile targets launched from Vandenberg
AFB and both seaborne and airborne platforms.
