VENTURA COUNTY'S PUBLIC SCHOOL districts are committed to providing high quality education to a K-12 student population that currently exceeds 145,000.Ventura County's 20 school districts serve 12 cities and communities. Although some districts within a city are designated as "unified," other communities are served by several school districts for elementary and high school students. A "unified" school district is a district serving K-12 and adult education students. Elementary school districts generally provide services to K-8 students. High school districts provide services to grades 9-12 and adult education. The Ventura County office of Education (http://www.vcss.k12.ca.us) provides fiscal services to Ventura County districts, educational resources to teachers and schools within Ventura County and is responsible for the Court and Community based schools, Special Education programs and Regional Occupational Programs throughout Ventura County. NBVC Port Hueneme is served by the Golden Valley Charter School, Hueneme Elementary School District,Ventura County Office of Education and Ventura County Community College District, which has three campuses.

The Ventura County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), located in Camarillo, insures a free and appropriate public education to all students with identified disabilities and also provides resources for transitions to higher education. HIGHER EDUCATION
California State University Channel Islands, located in Camarillo, is a student-centered, four year, public university known for its interdisciplinary, multicultural, and international perspectives and its emphasis on experiential and service learning. Channel Islands' strong academic programs focus on liberal studies, sciences, business, teaching credentials and innovative master's degrees, such as the M.S. in Bioinformatics. Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) is a public community college district serving residents throughout Ventura County. VCCCD's three colleges—Moorpark College, Oxnard College and Ventura College—offer programs for transfer to four-year colleges and universities, occupational and career technical training, basic skills instruction, as well as community service, economic development and continuing education for cultural growth, life enrichment and skills improvement. Other four-year colleges in the area include: University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB) in nearby Santa Barbara; California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, rated among the top 25 colleges in U.S. News and World Report; University of La Verne Professional Development Center, Oxnard; University of Southern California (USC); University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles; Cal State University, Fullerton; University of California, Irvine and California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo and Pomona are between one and three hours from Ventura County.
