Weather

Despite New England’s reputation for rugged climate, the weather in Southeastern Connecticut is quite mild. On average, there are only three days a year when the temperature goes above 90 degrees, and only one day when it falls to 0 degrees or below. Appreciable precipitation, averaging 44 inches per year, can be expected approximately 125 days a year, evenly spread over the months. Summer temperatures can reach 80-90 degrees and winter temperatures average from 20-30 degrees. Snowfall, averaging 34 inches per year, usually occurs between January and March.



Location

The base serves an active duty population of about 7,500 personnel accompanied by 12,000 family members. The base also is the host to Naval Reserve Units, an Army detachment and a host of DoD civilian personnel and contractors.

Child Care

Child and Youth Programs provide Child Development and recreational services for children 6 weeks to 12 years of age. The Child Development Center provides full and part day care for children 6 weeks to Kindergarten. The School Age Center provides before and after school care and Day Camp experiences. Schools

There are two school systems that service families residing in government housing at Naval Submarine Base New London. The majority of students residing in government housing off-base attend Groton Public Schools. Those students residing in government quarters within the gates of the base attend Ledyard Public Schools. Families who choose to live in the community attend the schools provided by the city/town in which they reside. Private, charter, and magnet schools are also available in the local area.



Youth Services

The Subase Youth Center, the Fleet and Family Support Center, the Groton Youth and Family Services and numerous church youth groups are some of the organizations which foster positive youth development. Call FFSC, 860-694-3383.
