Recreation and Leisure

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department on Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) offers a wealth of fitness and recreation options for the fleet and family in support of mission readiness and retention. The fitness options are offered at the individual, group or team level at any of the gymnasium, fitness or aquatics centers. Recreation activities that are available include bowling, golf, movies, auto hobby, lodging at the Beach Motel or at the RV parks, as well as dining facilities. The Liberty program for the single sailor offers weekly trips and events, comedy shows, and tickets for local sport teams.

MWR facilities, except for Liberty, are available for use by active duty military personnel, military retirees, their family members, DoD civilians and in some cases, the general public. Aquatics
MWR has outdoor swimming pools at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme. Port Hueneme is an Olympic-sized pool primarily set up for lap swimming. The Aquatics programs at both locations offer standard Red Cross swimming lessons for ages 6 months and older. Our Junior Lifeguard program is geared toward youth who want to be active in the water and learn water safety. We also offer summer water aerobics at Port Hueneme and surf clinics at Point Mugu.

Auto Skills Centers
MWR’s two auto skills centers enable you to complete tune-ups, rebuild an engine or paint your car. Both facilities offer tools, paint spray booths, wheel balancing, engine analyzers, valve grinding and facilities for lubricating your vehicles. The Point Mugu facility has 11 outdoor stalls to work on your vehicle, and at Port Hueneme we have a single-post lift for frame, undercarriage, and exhaust repair and an indoor tune-up stall. The machine shop is equipped to re-surface rotors or turn drums.

Bowling
The NBVC Lanes Bowling Center at Port Hueneme features 16 lanes, individual rental lockers, pro shop services and a snack bar. At Point Mugu a bowling center with 8 lanes is located next to the NEX.

Fitness Centers and Gymnasiums
MWR operates several fitness facilities that offer a wide range of programs and equipment to attain the fitness goals for all types of active patrons.

Warfield Gymnasium
This recently-renovated facility is a state-of-the-art fitness center with weight and exercise equipment that includes Cybex resistance machines, a Nordic Track, lifecycles, free weights and other fitness equipment to help you meet and maintain your fitness goals. The gym facility includes a full-sized basketball court and two racquetball court, plus an outdoor, lighted basketball/volleyball court.

BeeFit Wellness Center
and Mugu Fitness Center
BeeFit Wellness Center is located across from the Port Hueneme pool and Warfield Gymnasium and Mugu Fitness Center is located across from the NEX. The centers are equipped with PRT certified and other fitness equipment including cardio equipment, free weights, TRX, Life Fitness weight machines. A variety of fitness classes is offered, including kick-boxing, cycling, Zumba, aerobics, yoga, and also, massage therapy.

Bee-Hive Gymnasium
The Bee-Hive Gymnasium at Port Hueneme has a full court basketball floor and locker rooms available for showers and gear storage. Also a full boxing gym complete with boxing ring and heavy and speed bags.

Golf
The 18-hole NBVC Seabee Golf Course at Port Hueneme features a natural grass driving range, practice putting green, five water hazards and a complete pro shop, and men’s and women’s locker rooms and meeting rooms. Golf clubs and cart rental, club storage, lessons and punch cards are also available. The golf course is a soft-spike only facility and is open to the public.

Dining services located at the golf course include the 19th Hole in the club house open for breakfast and lunch, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 9th Hole Snack Bar is located “at the turn” for the mid-round snack or lunch, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We can also order tickets for the Florida area, including Disneyworld and Universal Studios. Purchase discount coupon books for money saving coupons to off-base establishments, tickets to movie theatres in the surrounding areas, and more. We carry LA Dodgers tickets for a selection of games, local events and more. Cruise tickets and a variety of hotel vouchers are also available. ITT offices are located at Bldg. 1167 next to the Bowling Center at Port Hueneme and at Point Mugu in Bldg. 16 across the hall from the gym entrance.

Liberty centers
The Single Sailor Liberty Programs at NBVC Port Hueneme’s CoffeeNet and NBVC Point Mugu’s SurfNet provide alcohol-free facilities open to active duty service members ages 18-25. Both centers are open daily and feature high-speed internet, various gaming systems, TV lounges, ping pong, billiards, special events, tours and trips and more. At the CoffeeNet, special coffee, muffins, bagels, donuts and snacks are available.

Movie theaters
The free-admission movie program at Needham Theater has showings Thursday through Sunday at NBVC Port Hueneme and Point Mugu Theater has free movies Friday through Sunday. Movie schedule and times are posted in the Fleet & Family Readiness “FFR Weekly Highlights” newsletter. Recorded movie schedules are also available by calling (805) 982-5002.

Outdoor recreation
MWR’s outdoor gear rental center offers a complete line of athletic, recreational and camping gear available for rent at Point Hueneme. We carry sleeping bags, boogie boards, stoves, tents, fresh and saltwater fishing gear and much more.

Parks and picnic areas
The Bolles Field Park at Port Hueneme may be reserved by individuals and commands for group functions. This park, located behind Needham Theater, has picnic tables, BBQ pits, volleyball, horseshoes and basketball courts. There is a large picnic pavilion with refrigeration, available with reservation, at the park.

Picnic Pavilion is located behind the base theater adjacent to the Youth Sports Complex at Point Mugu. The area has picnic tables, BBQ grills, fire ring, horseshoe pits, restroom facilities and a playground.

Recreational Lodging
The Port Hueneme Fairways RV Park has 34 pull-through sites with planned expansion for 51 more spaces to open in 2013. The RV park at Point Mugu is located at the beach front on Point Mugu and has 72 spaces. Both locations include full hook-ups, free Wi-Fi connection, picnic tables, and extra parking space. The RV Park is also the home of Lock & Leave and RAV Storage.

The Beach Motel located at the beach at Point Mugu is a great location for relaxing and enjoying the natural beauty and nature of the area. It has 24 rooms, free internet connection, and a campground for seasonal tent camping, as well as a large family beach area that is open year round. There is a 1.5-mile nature trail that meanders through the beach area to point out the natural and animal happenings in the area. It begins at the opening to the family beach area.
