Miramar Commands
M any U.S. strategic planners envision the 21st century to be one of cultural and ethnic discord, volatile contingencies and many veiled dangers to America's interests. This era of uncertainty will call for an agile, crisis-response force capable of resolving a host of potential conflicts. MCAS Miramar units have answered the nation's call in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks on America and stand ready to respond when future contingencies arise.

Home to the Third Marine Aircraft Wing, MCAS Miramar houses 16 flying squadrons and approximately 200 fixed-and rotary-wing aircraft. When responding to a contingency, a ground combat element, an air combat element and a logistics element combine to form a Marine Air-Ground Task Force. Thus, elements of the 1st Marine Division and 1st Marine Logistics Group combine with 3rd MAW elements to form a MAGTF specifically tailored for a mission. As a vital element of the nation's "911 Force," MCAS Miramar Marines and Sailors may respond to situations in the Pacific Rim, Southwest Asia, Central and South America, or anywhere required.

Miramar hosts 3rd MAW F/A-18 Hornet Squadrons, a C-130 Squadron, CH-53E heli-copter squadrons and MV-22 tilt-rotor squadrons and logistics support squadrons. Combined with 3rd MAW AH-1W Super Cobra and UH-1N Huey helicopters from Camp Pendleton and AV-8B Harriers from MCAS Yuma, Ariz., the wing provides potent aviation flexibility for the commander or any MAGTF. The superior air command and control from Marine Air Control Group 38 and service support from Marine Wing Support Group 37 provide the necessary expertise for all air operations.

Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (H&HS)
Approximately 1,200 Marines and Sailors make up Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, the main support element of the air station's daily operations. Some of the responsibilities of H&HS includes aircraft rescue and firefighting, military policing, facilities planning and maintenance, air traffic control, fuels, ordnance, legal assistance and public affairs. Their efforts ensure the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing has an optimal installation from which to train and deploy air combat support when the nation calls.
