Silver Valley Unified School District provides educational services to Fort Irwin. The District Administration Office is located in Yermo, Calif. Telephone: (760) 254-2916.
Families residing off-post in communities generally to the east of Barstow will be within the district.
Those who live in Barstow, or in communities to the west of the city, will be within the Barstow Unified School District. Telephone: (760) 255-6000.
On-post education facilities include the General Colin Powell State Preschool, serving 3 to 5 year olds; Jerry Lewis Elementary School, which covers kindergarten through second grade; Tiefort View Intermediate School, serving third, fourth and fifth grades, and; Fort Irwin Middle School, consisting of sixth through eighth grades. Total on-post population is approximately 1,900 students.
There are various school programs offered on post to provide assistance and enrichment to parents and children. These programs include a computer lab, band program for fourth through eighth grades, music programs for third, fourth and fifth graders, a school psychologist, speech therapist, school counselor, a health clerk, English as a second language support and Special Education Programs for both elementary and middle school children.
Families who cannot afford to send their children to preschool may be able to do so for free through a state-funded preschool program operated by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. The preschool, for 3 to 5 year olds, is a comprehensive child development program and holds class Monday through Friday, three hours a day. The goal of the program is to promote the intellectual, social and physical growth and development of pre-kindergarten age children. Families must meet income guidelines, with the lowest income Families getting priority.
Fort Irwin Middle School is a traditional middle school serving approximately 350 students in grades sixth through eighth.
Extracurricular activities are provided for students at all levels. In an effort to promote student success, remediation and tutoring are provided by staff for students.
High school students attend Silver Valley High School in Yermo, Calif., approximately 37 miles south of Fort Irwin. The district provides bus transportation. A full range of academic, social and athletic opportunities are provided.
The Calico Continuation High School is located in Daggett, Calif., and provides a wide range of opportunities for those students with special academic needs. The district provides bus transportation. Telephone: (760) 254-2715.
Continuing Your Education While at NTC
During your military service, take advantage of the educational and benefit programs provided by the Army. Tuition Assistance and GI Bill are programs available to Soldiers who qualify. MyCAA is available to many spouses. Financial aid, scholarships and grants are also available for Soldiers, spouses, dependents and civilians. The Education Center offers information on a variety of colleges and universities.
Fort Irwin Army
Soldiers and Family members have a golden opportunity to achieve their educational goals during their assignment at the NTC Fort Irwin. The Education Center has a staff of professional counselors to assist personnel in establishing degree plans and to provide counseling on tuition assistance, financial aid, scholarships and GI Bill.
The Education Center also provides testing services to include Army Personnel Testing, SAT/ACT college entrance exams to Soldiers, and proctoring services for individuals in distance learning programs. Barstow Community College on post offers CLEP and DANTES examinations; those who pass the exams can receive college credit without class attendance.
The Basic Skills Education Program (BSEP) is available for Soldiers and other community members who would like to brush up on English and math skills to raise their GT scores. Courses run monthly for three weeks, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Education Center also has a Multi-Use Learning Facility offering 10 workstations with CAC accessibility, printer, internet access, and assistance with GoArmyEd.com.

What is "DU?" Desert University (DU) is an initiative that allows Soldiers to achieve their educational goals. DU is not a school; DU allows a Soldier two days a week, between Monday and Thursday, during the hours of 3 and 6 p.m., to either take an in-person class through Barstow Community College or Park University, or take on an online course at an approved location.
How Do I Participate?
- Enroll in a college course that is scheduled during the hours of 3 to 6 p.m., or online.
- Bring proof of your course registration to the Education Center to get a DU memo from an education counselor.
- Get the DU memo signed by your commander.
- Return the DU memo to the Education Center.
- Attend class or work on an online course in the Education Center computer lab or at a location designated by your command (not your home or room) between 3 and 6 p.m., two days a week (Monday through Thursday).

Barstow Community College
Barstow Community College (BCC) is a regionally accredited, two-year school offering transferrable, lower-division requirements for an associate’s degree. As a California community college, BCC offers courses at a minimum cost to active duty Soldiers. Family members are also encouraged to take classes. They are given residency rights to attend classes at the same rate as active duty.
Fort Irwin classes are offered at a variety of times including the lunch hour, Desert University hours, evenings and weekends. BCC participates in the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOCAD) program, which allows students to complete degrees without losing credits through transfer. Park University is a fully accredited, four-year school. They offer a choice of many unique bachelor degree programs. Classes are offered on post and at the Marine Corp Logistics Base (MCLB) in Barstow. They have accelerated eight-week terms and five terms a year. Park University accepts credit from military service and military schools as well as other schools. Classes are open to active duty, veterans and civilians.
