Welcome Aboard
Welcome to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Since Oct. 1, 1997, Marines and Sailors have been living and working aboard the 23,000-acre facility.
Miramar's primary mission is to maintain and operate the facilities; and provide services and material to support operations of the 3rd MAW and other tenant organizations. The success of this mission is made possible by Miramar's most valuable asset-its people.
Marines, Sailors and Civilian Marines are the driving force behind what makes Miramar a "city within a city." Miramar features a shopping center, restaurants, fire and public works departments and a number of other facilities used in day-to-day life.
The expeditionary mission of the Navy-Marine Corps team requires strategic co-location in order to maintain the flexibility required for national security. MCAS Miramar is centrally located near more than 10 West Coast Navy and Marine Corps installations. Sixty-seven percent of Continental United States Department of Defense training ranges are located in three southwestern states—California, Arizona and Nevada. Miramar is ideally positioned to maximize training dollars and prepare U.S. armed forces for operational commitments.
The DoD had a $20.6 billion impact on the San Diego economy in fiscal year 2011. Also, 26% of the county's employment is DoD-related.
In the following pages, incoming personnel, assigned Marines and Sailors, family members and retirees will find information about the check in process, air station units, military family housing, Navy health care, recreational opportunities and numerous attractions in the local area.
