How do I access health care once I arrive in Hawaii?
Aloha and E Komo Mai! (Hello and Welcome!) As an active duty military service member arriving in Hawaii, your Personnel Office will ensure that you in-process through your service's Military Treatment Facility (MTF). There, you will be presented with available Tricare Healthcare System options.
In Hawaii, TriWest Healthcare Alliance is the TRICARE Managed Care Support Contractor and civilian partner with the Department of Defense's military health care system.
For more information about TRICARE, please call (888) 874-9378 or visit your nearest Service Center. There is a TSC located near the Oceanside Entrance of Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC).
Clinic Orientations for Newcomers
and Newly Eligible Prime Enrollees
Each primary care clinic offers Orientation Sessions that explain Prime. Spouses are encouraged to attend the orientation with active duty service members. You and your family will be assigned a Primary Care Manager (PCM) at your respective clinic that will manage your health care.
Most active duty Army personnel will receive care at Tripler or the Schofield Barracks Health Clinic (SBHC).
Liaison Offices
Personnel from the other armed services may obtain assistance through their respective liaison offices. Liaison desks for Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps are all located on the first floor, B Wing, near the Tripler Oceanside entrance; call (808) 433-6611.
Direct lines are as follows:
Air Force Liaison (808) 433-6775
Army Liaison (808) 433-6114
Marine Corps Liaison (808) 433-6614
Navy Liaison (808) 433-6611

Veterans Admin (808) 433-0490
Primary Care Orientations
The Tripler Internal Medicine and Family Medicine clinics conduct clinic orientations for new arrivals and newly eligible Tripler Prime enrollees. The purpose of these orientations is to improve primary care access and beneficiary satisfaction by introducing enrollees face-to-face with their primary care teams and by educating them on how to best access the Tripler health care system.
Orientations cover a variety of topics, including clinic hours, how to make an appointment, how to contact your Primary Care Manager (PCM), after-hours care options, how to change your PCM, how to refill a prescription when away from Tripler, how to obtain free over-the-counter medications, how to obtain a "Self Help" health care guidebook, and other useful information that will reduce the challenges arising from being mis- or uninformed.
Contact your Primary Care Clinic to schedule your PCM orientation. The Family Medicine Clinic conducts orientations every Monday, in the Family Medicine Clinic Conference Room located in D Wing, 1st Floor. Appointments can be made by calling (808) 433-2500.
The Internal Medicine Clinic conducts orientations the second Tuesday of every month, in the Internal Medicine Clinic Conference Room located in H-Wing, 3rd Floor. Appointments can be made by calling (808) 433-6641.
The Pediatrics Clinic is located in G-Wing, 4th Floor. Appointments may be made by calling (808) 433-9226.
Having a Baby?
Congratulations from the staff of Tripler Army Medical Center and Schofield Barracks Obstetrics (OB) clinics. Four options for prenatal care are available:
Tripler Army Medical Center OB and Gynecology Clinic: Routine and complicated (high risk) OB care for the duration of your pregnancy.
Schofield Barracks OB Clinic: You can receive your OB care up to 40 weeks as long as there are no complications.
Certified Midwife Program (Tripler only): Allows you to be seen by nurse midwives during your pregnancy and then to have a midwife present for the birth of your baby. If you are interested, request an appointment with one of the midwives and discuss your interest with them. This option is limited to women who have a low risk of needing any intervention during delivery.
Women may also choose the option of being followed during their pregnancy by their family medicine physician. Currently, Family Medicine sees obstetrical patients at Tripler and Schofield Barracks.
The OB/GYN department provides several Women's Health Nurse Practitioners who provide uncomplicated prenatal and postpartum care. All staff physicians providing obstetrical care are fully credentialed and are either board-certified or board-eligible with their national organizations. In addition to eight OB/GYN generalists, seven sub-specialists are available in a variety of areas, including providing care for women with high-risk pregnancies, infertility, GYN oncology (cancer) and urology/gynecology (pelvic/bladder problems).
Tripler Army Medical Center sports newly renovated Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) rooms with the intent of providing family-centered care. The remodeled LDR rooms are large, filled with color-coordinated furniture packages. Jacuzzis are installed in the rooms to help ease labor pains.
The care at Tripler is documented to be absolutely outstanding. The National Prenatal Information Center collects data quarterly from military and civilian hospitals that have OB services as a large aspect of the facility's care. Tripler consistently scores better than the national average in many areas. The aspects of care that are monitored include the cesarean section rate, infant birth complications and low birth weight babies. Tripler is also one of the few island medical facilities to have an NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) with a neonatologist available 24 hours a day.
The typical post-delivery stay is 36 to 48 hours and new moms should feel at home in private postpartum rooms. Mothers must be eligible beneficiaries to deliver at Tripler and should call (808) 433-5927 for more information.

Use the directory to the left if you don't want to listen to all the menu options.
Tripler has simplified the process of making appointments. We have added more clinics to the Central Appointment System. By calling one telephone number, you can make a number of clinic appointments. The telephone number to call is (808) 433-2778.
Tripler's Central Appointment System enables a patient to make appointments for a number of different clinics with one telephone call. Busy times for operators are 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Busy days are Mondays, Tuesdays and after holidays. The best days to call are Thursday and Friday afternoons and on paydays. The Central Appointment System is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and all federal holidays. To schedule appointments, call (808) 433-2778. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:25 p.m.
Tripler uses an Automatic Call Distribution System. The system allows you to direct yourself to a clinic appointment clerk. The recording says the following:
1. Patients should not walk into clinics without an appointment, except for emergencies and announced walk-in clinics.
2. Patients should have their sponsor's Social Security Number and other required DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) information available when they call for an appointment.
3. Appointment personnel will ask screening questions about a patient's medical problems so that proper referral to the correct clinic can be made.
4. Patients who find they cannot keep a scheduled appointment should call as soon as possible to cancel in order that the appointment slot may be filled with another patient. Call the 24-hour cancellation line at (808) 433-1177/1164.
Information Center
Personnel working at the Information Center receive hundreds of questions daily. They have a vast amount of knowledge about Tripler. If you have a question about Tripler, call Information Center personnel at (808) 433-6661/2/3. Outpatient Medical Records
The Outpatient Records Office is located just inside the Mountainside entrance. Family Medicine patient records are maintained separately in the Family Medicine Records Office, located at the clinic on Wing 1D, Oceanside. Upon arrival to the islands, you must bring your records and military ID to the Medical Records Office to register. Patients are no longer authorized to hand-carry their records. Medical records for appointments will have already been forwarded to the appropriate clinic through notification between the clinic and the Outpatient Record Office.
Patients with records maintained at other military health clinics on the island should be aware that there is a courier service and an electronic health records system that does not require hand-carried records to Tripler clinics. The only exception is a Navy service member whose duty assignment is a ship. If you have any questions, please call (808) 433-3569.

Release of Information
The Medical Correspondence Office is located on G1, basement floor of the Oceanside A Wing, Room 152 (G1 A/152). Patients needing copies of their inpatient or outpatient medical records must complete a requestform before Medical Correspondence can release any medical information. Requests take 15 to 30 days, so you will be required to leave your address and telephone information. Examples of release of information include temporary disability insurance, medical statements, lab or X-ray results to other outside physicians, retrieval of medical information from other hospitals or physicians, PCS/ETS and personal copies of medical records. Medical information will not be released to spouses without the patient's ID card, power of attorney and patient's signature on a request for releaseform indicating release to spouse is requested. Requests may be faxed to (808) 433-1551. If you have any questions, please call (808) 433-2526/2527.
DEERS—Defense Enrollment
Eligibility Reporting System
Soldiers are enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) when they enter active duty. To enroll family members, legal documentation is required. Soldiers can update the status of family members by presenting legal documents, such as marriage certificates, birth certificates or adoption papers at their local Military Personnel Office. If this is not done, family members may be denied health benefits other than emergency care. It is important to enroll newborns in DEERS as soon as possible after birth.
If you have any questions about DEERS, call (808) 433-9166 or (800) 527-5602.

The patient lots are all the close-in parking locations on the Mountainside and Oceanside areas of the facility. If you expect to be at Tripler for an extended stay, you are encouraged to leave your vehicle at home.
If it's necessary to park your vehicle at Tripler during your stay, the following procedures should be followed: Park the vehicle in the vicinity of the flagpole. Ensure that all valuables are removed from the vehicle or are placed out of sight. Ensure all windows are up and that the vehicle is properly secured. If the vehicle will remain within Tripler's parking area longer than 72 hours, notify the Tripler Police by calling (808) 433-1111. Patients should be able to provide a description of the vehicle and license plate number. The Admissions and Dispositions office is located on the first floor, Oceanside. Telephone: (808) 433-6112.
Emergency Room
Which patients should go to the Emergency Room? The Emergency Room is designed to care for problems that require rapid attention by a physician, such as a suspected heart attack, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, a broken bone or severe injury. Patients with emergencies have priority over non-emergent conditions. Minor problems like most rashes and colds, problems that are a few days old but not getting to the point of desperation, and requests for prescription refills should not be seen in the ER, but at the patient's Primary Care Clinic. If you are active duty, sick call is also an option. Keep in mind that, although we strive to keep your wait time to a minimum during your visit to the ER, the most serious cases will be seen first, and this procedure can sometimes increase your wait time.
If you feel you have a serious emergency medical condition, call 911 for an ambulance.
Nursing Staff
Throughout your hospital stay, a highly skilled nursing staff works together with you and your physician to restore, promote and maintain your health and well-being. Wherever your care is provided, you can count on nursing staff to welcome you and your family and make you feel at home. Professionally trained nurses will continually plan, coordinate and provide the expert care and teaching you require.
Nurses understand how important meeting your special needs and concerns are to your health and well-being. Tripler nurses are the pride of the Pacific. We are here for you!
Your Next Step
Remember, any outpatient care you receive in a military clinic or hospital is at no cost to you. Whenever you receive care from civilian providers in Hawaii, your Program helps to cover the cost of care. It's important for you to understand and decide which Program choice is right for you.
Our Service Center staff are prepared to help you understand the Program and select the most appropriate Program. They can also help you select a Network Provider, choose a PCM, enroll in Prime and help explain your bills or claims. You may call (888) 874-9378 or visit the Service Center located nearest you Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office is closed Wednesday, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

U.S. Army Health Clinic, Schofield Barracks
General Information
The U.S. Army Health Clinic at Schofield Barracks (USAHC-SB) provides a wide variety of services and quality health care to the majority of the 36,000 Soldiers and their families assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, other commands, as well as some military retirees. Schofield's health clinics provide more than 50 percent of all Army primary health care in Hawaii.
USAHC-SB is also responsible for deployment cycle medicine for most Soldiers on Oahu and runs the largest Soldier Readiness Processing site in the Pacific.
USAHC-SB is a historical structure that has been extensively modernized. The current facility was constructed in the early 1920s and expanded during the next decade as a hospital. In 1965, hospital services were transferred to Tripler Army Medical Center, and USAHC-SB became exclusively an outpatient facility. Since that time and especially since Sep. 11, 2001, health care services have expanded dramatically to accommodate the growing mission.
Now one of the largest outpatient clinics in the U.S. Army, with 19 buildings on six acres, USAHC-SB is located on Waianae Avenue at McCornack Road on Schofield Barracks.

Family Medicine provides medical services to family members of all ages (infants to adults), to include routine medical care, gynecological care, routine physical examinations and well-baby checks, school physicals, and minor surgeries (vasectomy and wart removal). Every active duty family, whose sponsor is stationed or resides on Schofield Barracks, may enroll in the Family Medicine Service. Retired personnel and their families may also enroll.

Acute Care
The Acute Care Clinic is open seven days a week, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for urgent care. These hours are subject to change. The USAHC-SB Acute Care Clinic operates from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., daily, and is staffed with a physician, nurse and emergency medical technicians. The Acute Care Clinic can be reached at (808) 433-8850.

The Acute Care Clinic is available to anyone eligible to receive military health care. Emergency ambulance service is also provided 24 hours a day for Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, Helemano Military Reservation, Kunia Tunnel and NAVCAMS EASTPAC. All ambulance requests should be directed to the city ambulance dispatch service by dialing 911. Behavioral Health
The Schofield Health Clinic is the home of the Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SAFAC), an umbrella organization consisting of four behavioral health clinics. The SAFAC offers services to active duty Soldiers via the Soldier Assistance Center, (808) 433-8600; to adult family members through the Adult Family Assistance Center, (808) 433-8130; to child and adolescent dependents at the Child and Adolescent Assistance Center, (808) 433-8175; and marriage and family therapy services at the Marriage and Family Therapy Center, (808) 433-8550. Services include individual, group and family therapy, and medication management and psychological testing. Ongoing groups include deployment support for families and a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) group for redeploying Soldiers. The SAFAC also operates a 24-hour assistance line at (808) 655-6600 for Soldiers and family members who may have questions about services in the Schofield community.
Soldier Evaluation for Life Fitness (SELF)
The SELF assessment is a post-deployment comprehensive assessment that is focused on behavioral health issues in Soldiers during the 90-180 post-deployment health reassessment window. The SELF assessment consists of two stages: a computerized survey and a clinical interview conducted by a behavioral health-trained provider. The survey is a questionnaire that combines items from the Department of Defense's Post Deployment Health Reassessment (PDHRA; DDform 2900) with screening measures assessing physical wellness and behavioral health. The physical wellness screens yield information on several areas, including preventive medicine, tobacco cessation, injury prevention, alcohol use and nutrition.
The second stage of the SELF process is a clinical interview. Based on their questionnaire responses, Soldiers are assigned to an interview category ranging from a 15-minute low-intensity interview to a 60-minute interview conducted by a doctoral-level provider.
The Hawaii SELF program includes behavioral health follow-up services that include psychoeducational classes, workshops and outpatient individual and group psychotherapy. All treatment is evidence-based and time-limited. In the future, the SELF program will be conducting an intensive outpatient treatment program for PTSD, as well as outreach and prevention programs in the SB community. Please call (808) 433-0880 for more information about the Hawaii SELF Program.

Active duty personnel are required to turn in their health records at their unit aid station, Aviation Medicine Clinic or Troop Medical Clinic. Family members will turn in their outpatient treatment records to the USAHC-SB medical records section.
Newly arrived personnel without medical records, to include family members, should report to the medical records section to receive a new medical card for embossing medical forms, and to be registered in the medical center's computer system. Dental Program
The Dental Program (TDP) is a voluntary, comprehensive dental insurance program offered worldwide by the Department of Defense to family members of all active duty Uniformed Services personnel and Selected Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) members and/or their family members. United Concordia is the administrator of this program, through which family members and Reservists receive dental care from civilian dentists in the local community. Active duty military are encouraged to enroll their family members in TDP; otherwise, they should be prepared to pay 100 percent of their family members' dental costs in the civilian community.
For more information, to enrollment or find participating civilian dentists, view United Concordia's website at http://www.ucci.com or call (800) 866-8499.
