Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord,
the Madigan Healthcare System is a

California that serve more than 109,000
active duty service members, their families and
retirees. Much like its civilian counterparts, the
Madigan Healthcare System provides a wide
array of medical services, such as general
medical and surgical care, patient-centered
adult and pediatric primary care, a 24-hour
emergency room, specialty clinics, clinical
services and behavioral health and wellness
services. Madigan is a values-based, standards-
driven medical organization providing
safe, quality care as part of a dominant power
projection platform. Learn more about Madigan

Emergencies/Urgent Care
Emergency Room
Madigan's Emergency Room (ER) is available
for medical and traumatic emergencies
at all times. The ER is accessible via Gardner
Loop. Upon arrival, specially trained nurses
evaluate each patient to determine those who
require the most urgent attention. The degree
of urgency, not arrival time, establishes who
will be seen first.
Waiting times range from fewer than
30 minutes to five hours or more, and typically
increase throughout the day. Evaluation takes
15 to 30 minutes; or up to several hours if
laboratory tests, X-rays or other special studies
are required. Weekends and holidays are especially
busy because most other hospital services
and outlying clinics are closed.
Urgent Care
If you have an urgent medical need that
does not require emergency care, please call
the TRICARE Regional Appointment Center
at (800) 404-4506 before coming into the
Emergency Room. If you are unable to get a
same day appointment for your urgent medical
need, you will be referred to an Urgent
Care Clinic in a community surrounding Joint
Base Lewis-McChord for immediate attention.

Exceptional Family
Member Program
The Exceptional Family Member Program
(EFMP) is a mandatory enrollment program
that works with military and civilian agencies
to provide a comprehensive, coordinated,
and multidisciplinary approach for medical,
educational and community support services
to families with special needs. Soldiers and
Airmen on active duty enroll in the program
when they have a family member with a physical,
emotional, developmental, or intellectual
disability requiring specialized services so their
needs can be considered in the military assignment
process. When possible, active duty service
members are assigned to an area where
the medical and special education needs of the
family member can be met.
Enrollment is available through the EFMP
at Madigan Army Medical Center in the
Developmental Clinic on the first floor of the
Medical Mall. Call (253) 968-1370 or (253)

Warrior Transition Unit
In 2007, Madigan activated a Warrior
Transition Battalion for wounded, ill and injured
Soldiers. Madigan Healthcare System's
Warrior Transition Battalion is one of 29 Warrior
Transition Units throughout the Army. The
WTB provides medical care, advocacy and
leadership to active duty, Army National Guard
and Army Reserve Soldiers who need complex
long-term care. The WTB's primary mission
is to assist Soldiers and their families through
their healing and transition them back to regular
duty or civilian life. Its innovative programs
and comprehensive care continue to evolve to
meet the physical, emotional and intellectual
needs of Soldiers.
The WTB also oversees a Community-
Based Warrior Transition Unit that allows
Guard and Reserve Soldiers to live with their
families and to receive local healthcare in
communities not near Army medical facilities.
The WTB also shares and partners with the
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other
governmental agencies to enhance the care
and service of Soldiers and families at both
national and local levels.
