WARRIOR TRANSITION UNIT (WTU)
The Army Medical Department supports the war effort by providing the highest quality and most advanced medical care for Soldiers on the battle-field—saving more lives of Soldiers wounded in combat than ever before. Army leaders and medical professionals know that some wounds lie beneath the surface and are not always visible upon first assessment.

In an effort to ensure that injured warriors receive the appropriate assessments and highest level of outpatient care, the Army established the Warrior Transition Program.

Fort Leonard Wood's WTU was established in June 2007 and currently has over 130 Warriors in Transition. Besides Fort Leonard Wood, the unit is responsible for Wounded Warriors throughout the state of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and Canada.

A Warrior in Transition is an Active Component or Reserve Component Soldier who meets the qualifications of Medical Hold, Medical Holdover, or Active Duty Medical Extension. It also includes Active Component Soldiers who require a Medical Evaluation Board or have complex medical needs requiring greater than six months of treatment.

Fort Leonard Wood's Warrior Transition Unit provides command and control, primary care, and case management for service members receiving treat-ment for injuries suffered while deployed in the war on terror. The unit works to promote every injured warrior's timely return to the force or transition to civilian life.

The Warrior Transition Unit is a transition assistance unit with the mission of overseeing the health, welfare, and morale of Warriors receiving medical care at an Army military treatment facility. By design, the unit has a robust cadre, which allows doctors and nurses to focus on medical care, nurse case managers to manage medical care, and unit cadre to focus on meeting all command and control functions.

WTU HISTORY
Medical holdover operations (MHO) began in 2003, as large numbers of reserve component Soldiers were mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. As the population of mobilized Soldiers in need of medical evaluation and treatment rose, the Army established accelerated access standards, dedicated providers and case managers, new command and control and installation support structure, and other provisions to support these active duty Soldiers.

The term "medical holdover" was coined to define the population of active duty, mobilized Soldiers. MHO Soldiers were defined as mobilized Soldiers who were diverted from their normal mobilization mission (or any contingency operation) because of new or aggravated pre-existing medical conditions as a result of being mobilized.

Soldiers could become medical holdovers either in a pre-deployment or post-deployment status, including via medical evacuation. With the establishment of the Army Medical Action Plan in 2007, the term Medical Holdover gave way to Warrior Transition.

To reach the WTU, call (573) 596 0038.
