History
The Duke Brigade has evolved through a myriad of changes since its history began on May 24, 1917 as the 1st Expeditionary Division. The unit was quickly pressed into action upon its arrival to France and was baptized by fire in the battles of Montdidier-Noyon, Aisne-Marne, St.

Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine 1918 and Picardy 1918. In August of 1942 the unit was once again called to defend its nation's interests overseas. During WWII the Duke Brigade fought battles in Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, the invasion of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and other locations across Central Europe. Following reactivation in 1964, the unit proceeded to The Republic of Vietnam where it saw six long years of action earning thirteen streamers and citations for its actions. After Vietnam the unit moved to its new home station at Goeppingen, GE where it remained until it was deployed to Saudi Arabia where it participated in the Defense of Saudi Arabia and Liberation and Defense of Kuwait Campaigns. The Duke Brigade was involved in the VII CORPS spear head operation into Iraq. Upon completion of Desert Storm the unit returned to Germany and was inactivated on Aug. 15, 1991.

During the late 1990s through 2003, the Duke Brigade deployed numerous times to the Balkans in order to help stabilize and bring peace to the war-torn region. Only five months after returning from the Balkans, the Brigade deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following redeployment from Iraq, the Duke Brigade prepared for transformation into an Infantry Brigade Combat Team and movement to Fort Hood, Texas.

The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, was reassigned under United States Forces Command, with stationing at Fort Hood Texas, effective April 19, 2007. In June 2008, the unit deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan. In the Fall of 2009, the Duke Brigade Combat Team moved from Fort Hood, Texas, and uncased its colors at Fort Knox, Ky.
