The VA Medical Center in Hampton, Va., takes patients on a walk-in basis and by appointment and provides primary, acute inpatient, psychiatric, chronic spinal cord, long-term, hospice palliative and domiciliary rehabilitative residential care. Other resources include compensated work therapy, hemodialysis, hospice, transitional residencies, oral surgery, an outpatient substance abuse treatment program, post-traumatic stress disorder assistance, a domiciliary drug abuse program, an extended care rehab center, a sexual trauma program, mental health case management, vocational rehab and a women’s health program.

The Virginia Department of Health divides the state into health districts for public health care, and Hampton Roads counties and municipalities work with a total of nine different ones. Some cover several smaller entities and others, like the Chesapeake Health District, are coextensive with their population centers.

Services vary depending on each clinic’s resources, and those seeking care always should contact a center in advance to make sure their specific need can be met there. For qualifying patients, charges are adjusted based on ability to pay.

Common services include pediatric and well baby visits, obstetrics and gynecology, family planning, geriatrics, vaccinations, health nutrition education and counseling, obesity and diabetes prevention and management, primary care, internal medicine, family practice, diagnostic laboratory and dental services, medication assistance, some pharmacy services, AIDS assistance, sexually transmitted disease prevention, tuberculosis control, domestic and sexual violence prevention, the WIC program for women, infants and children, the Child & Adult Care Food Program, health care for the homeless, and case management and referrals.

The Bon Secours mobile Care-A-Van makes regular calls monthly to provide medical care to uninsured adults and children throughout Hampton Roads.
