Joint Base Medical Care

Medical Care at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Appointments, including same-day appointments, can be made by calling the 673d Medical Group at the DoD/VA Joint Venture Hospital at 907-580-2778.

Appointments can also be made at www.tricareonline.com or via MiCare. Registration is required for MiCare and is available to individuals enrolled in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Flight Medicine. Using MiCare allows patients to make appointments, view lab test results, see medical history and procedures, allergies, keep a list of medications and correspond more easily with their providers.

Emergency ambulance service is available on a 24-hour basis for active-duty members and their families residing on JBER. For active duty, dependents and retirees eligible for care who live off base in Anchorage, dialing 911 can access this service.

Callers should be prepared to provide their name and phone number, location of patient, number and gender of patients and the nature of the illness or injury.

A parent must accompany dependent minors to the hospital in order for them to receive treatment of any kind, unless a dire emergency exists.

Parents who leave their children with friends while traveling out of the local area should always obtain a limited power of attorney authorizing a responsible person to consent to medical care for their children.

TRICARE Program Enrollment
Incoming active-duty members and their family members are enrolled in TRICARE Prime upon in processing at the medical "Healthmart" briefing. Eligibility must be current and accurate in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System prior to enrollment taking place. Any questions regarding DEERS can be directed to the Military Personnel Flight in the People Center by calling 907-552-8080, by calling 800-538-9552, or by visiting the DEERS website at www.tricare.mil/deers. TRICARE also has an office in Building 600 on JBER-Richardson; all services are on a walk-in basis. The Soldier patient advocate can be reached at 907-384-8077.

TRICARE Nurse Advice Line (TNAL)
Do you need to speak to a Registered Nurse immediately? Do you have questions regarding treatment of a rash, cough or a recent injury? Call toll-free (888) 805-3377 to speak with a nurse 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nurses can provide medical advice, assist with questions, and book appointments if required.

673d Medical Group
673d Medical Operations Squadron
Approximately 340 health care professionals provide primary care including family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and emergency medicine. Specialty care includes mental health, family advocacy, cardiopulmonary, dermatology, allergy/immunizations, neurology, gastroenterology, sleep lab, the traumatic brain injury clinic, substance abuse, physical therapy, chiropractic, and occupational therapy. Normal clinic operations are weekdays with the exception of the Emergency Department which is open 24/7.

673d Dental Squadron
The Dental Clinic is located on the second floor of the 673d Medical Group. The dental squadron provides a full range of services to active-duty members including general dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, implants and prosthodontics.

Orthodontic services are limited to the treatment of severe malocclusion. A Pediatric Dentistry program is available to children and adolescents on a referral basis. The squadron supports an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency training program.
Routine dental care for active-duty family members is available in the local civilian community through the TRICARE Dental Plan. Sign in for dental sick call at the Dental Clinic is 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Annual examinations for active duty personnel are by appointment or walk-in basis. The clinic is open Monday through Friday, with the exception of a training afternoon the third Thursday of each month. Emergency care is available after duty hours through the Emergency Department in the 673d Medical Group. The dental clinic telephone number is 907-580-5010.

In Alaska, comprehensive dental care is provided for all active duty personnel. Active duty family members should be enrolled in the TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan (FMDP). Many local dentists are participating providers in the TRICARE insurance program. A list of local providers can be obtained at your assigned dental facility or through the TRICARE Office.

Family members should be enrolled for at least 60 days prior to making an appointment to be eligible for coverage. Responsibility for FMDP enrollment falls on the service member and should be directly coordinated with the insurance carrier.

More information can be found at the TRICARE Office. A list of local providers can be obtained at your assigned dental facility or through the UCCI website at www.ucci.com or www.metlife.com/tricare. Family members should be enrolled for at least 60 days prior to making an appointment to be eligible for coverage. 673d Aerospace Medicine Squadron
The 673d AMDS provides the following services that support the wing and our beneficiaries: flight medicine, primary care, preventive/occupational medicine, force health management, optometry, public health, occupational and environmental surveillance, CBRNE identification, human performance enhancement training, disaster/flight line response services, health promotion services, and oversight of the installation PT testing program. Sick call for personnel on flying status is provided daily from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 1 to 1:30 p.m. at the Flight Medicine Clinic in Building 8497, with additional information available by calling 907-551-4006.

673d Medical Support Squadron
The Medical Support Squadron provides a full complement of support services to medical group staff and beneficiaries to include: Personnel and Administrative Services, Medical Logistics, Information Systems, Medical Readiness, Patient Administration, TRICARE Operations, Resource Management, Nutritional Medicine, Pharmacy and Laboratory Services.

673d Surgical Operations Squadron
The 673d Surgical Operations Squadron offers full surgical specialty capability for general surgery, orthopedics, podiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology including laser refractive surgery for active duty members, wound care, and comprehensive pain management.

The Ambulatory Procedure Unit provides care for outpatients undergoing surgical procedures not requiring an overnight hospital stay. Surgical patients who require inpatient or overnight care are admitted to the intensive care unit or the multi-service unit.

Anesthesia services include perioperative counseling, general and regional anesthetics, postoperative pain management, and 24/7 call coverage for obstetrical anesthesia. The squadron also supports a clinical enrichment site for the Uniform Services University for the Nurse Anesthesia Program. The Infusion service provides our beneficiaries outpatient infusion therapy, also called intravenous or IV therapy, for short or long-term treatment.

Army Medical Department Activity- Alaska
military hospital, active-duty Soldiers are seen at the Troop Medical Clinic, operated by U.S. Army Medical Department Activity-Alaska.

The Troop Medical Clinic is conveniently located in Building 786 on D Street and is open from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Thursday mornings when it closes for training, reopening at 1 p.m. Routine appointments begin at 9 a.m. and can be scheduled by calling 907-384-0600. Sick call is for active duty only. No appointment is needed for sick call, which is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Soldiers report to Building 786 with a DD Form 689 SIGNED by their command. Upon entering the Troop Medical Clinic they will be triaged and directed where to go.

Army family members are required to be screened for enrollment in the Exceptional Family Member Program before being granted command sponsorship in Alaska. Availability of specialized medical care is limited in Alaska, so some medical problems cannot be supported here. For information about screening or the medical aspects of EFMP, contact the Troop Medical Clinic at 907-384-7514.

Please turn your family's health records in to the medical representative during in-processing or at the Troop Medical Clinic upon your arrival. Soldiers who require enrollment or screening in the Exceptional Family Member Program should contact the EFMP coordinator at the TMC or call 384-7514. TRICARE is located in Building 600; all services are on a walk-in basis. The Soldier patient advocate can be reached at 907-384-8077.

The clinic also provides Occupational Health Services and immunizations to civilian employees. Specialty clinic services and all in-patient services are provided by the 673d Medical Group hospital.

Preventive Medicine services include health-risk appraisals, smoking cessation and childbirth classes. Patients may call the clinic at 384-0600 and ask for the Health Promotion NCO or call the Preventive Medicine Section at 384-1401 for information about the available services and classes.

The Community Mental Health Service, providing family advocacy and mental health counseling services, can be reached by calling 907-384-0405.

After-hours emergency care is only available at the joint military hospital's emergency room. Emergency ambulance service is available by calling 911.

The Army Dental Clinic is in Building 634, at Second and B Streets. Clinic hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The clinic is closed until 12:30 the third Thursday of every month for training. The clinic is staffed to provide a broad spectrum of modern dentistry. The dental staff at the joint military hospital on JBERElmendorf is available for specialty referrals as necessary.

Dental sick call at the Dental Clinic is 7:30 to 9 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday. Annual examinations for active-duty personnel are by appointment or walk-in basis. In-processing times are walk-in only. The clinic is open Monday through Friday, with the exception of holidays. Emergency care is available after duty hours by contacting the CQ paging system at 230-1473. The dental clinic telephone number is 907-384-2483 

Alaska Fisher House
The Alaska Fisher House is a compassionate care facility located on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson within walking distance of the joint military hospital and the VA Center. The house provides a comfortable place for families to stay while a loved one receives medical care. The facility serves patients and families from all branches of the military receiving active medical treatment at the Joint Medical Center or local area hospitals. The house provides a safe and comfortable homeaway- from-home for families in need. A total of 12 rooms are available.

Patients and/or families of patients from all branches of the military and all components actively receiving care/treatment at the Joint DoD-VA Medical Center are eligible to stay at the facility. The guests must live outside a 50-mile radius of Anchorage. Availability of rooms is provided on a space-available basis. Priority is given to families of Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom veterans, families of critically ill patients and oncology. Patients and guests must be able to care for themselves as the staff does not provide any medical care, assistance or transportation.

Active-duty personnel living in the barracks or dorms are also authorized to have family members stay in the house while their service member is receiving treatment. Due to a very generous contribution, there is currently no fee to stay at the facility.

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 12,000 families, and have made available over three million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House! In addition to constructing new houses, Fisher House Foundation continues to support existing Fisher Houses and help individual military families in need. We are also proud to administer and sponsor Scholarships for Military Children, the Hero Miles program, and co-sponsor the Newman's Own Award.
