AIRMAN AND FAMILY READINESS CENTER

The center has evolved into a focal point to address the concerns of active-duty military members, retirees, DoD civilians and their families. The ready and willing staff of professionals can help with information/referrals, relocation, local employment, personal finances, family life skills, readiness, crisis assessment, volunteer assistance and transitioning to civilian life. To enhance the quality of life, well-being and readiness of Cannon personnel, the A&FRC also provides the following services:

1. The Air Force Aid Society helps during financial emergencies with such programs as HAP Arnold Scholarships, Bundles for Babies, Child Care for PCS, Child Care for Volunteers, Car Care Because We Care, Phone Home (phone cards for deployed members) and Give Parents a Break (up to six hours of free child care for families of deployed or remote members).

2. The Family Readiness Program provides a dynamic mix of assistance and support for all base personnel during deployments and separations, natural disasters and evacuations, and personal crisis situations. The list features pre-deployment, return and reunion, and the Morale Call Program.

3. The base-wide Volunteer Resource Program finds, places and recognizes volunteers with local volunteer agencies that best suit their personal interests or career goals. The variety of opportunities involves weekend projects or a long-term programs.

4. The Career Focus Program helps transitioning active-duty members, spouses and other authorized personnel find local jobs. On the one hand, the staff works with area employers and various organizations to gain job referrals, while on the other, participants increase their marketability and employability through assessments, job search skills and career planning.

5. The Personal Financial Management Program offers financial education, information and counseling. Basically, personal finance counselors focus on individual and family budgeting, financial planning, and investing and money management.

6. The Relocation Assistance Program helps ease the stress of moving in or out of Cannon for all active-duty military, retirees, guard and reservists on active duty, DoD civilians and their family members. Programs include Right Start, Loan Locker, Smooth Move and Sponsor Training. Pick up a sponsor packets at A&FRC or visit http://apps.mhf.dod.mil/esat. < You can also request a sponsor online. 7. The Transition Assistance Program helps armed forces personnel and their families who are separating or retiring from military service and transitioning back to the civilian life. Transition specialists can also assist with career planning, resume review and job searches.

8. The Information and Referral Program links installation and community resources requests with available and appropriate service providers.

9. The Family Life Education Programs enhance knowledge, skills and abilities so you can anticipate and meet challenges throughout the various stages of the family life cycle. Attend Heart Link, for instance, to learn about your spouse's military career and how you fit into it.

10. The Discovery Center contains a comprehensive collection of materials and resources to aid in all aspects of transition. Items include computers with Internet access, printers, scanners, copiers and self-paced, self-help CD-ROMs, an extensive reference library of books and videos to check out and review in the home, along with an abundance of free literature and pamphlets on numerous subjects, workshops and seminars.

The Education Center specializes in a large selection of academic programs and tests to enhance your personal and professional careers. Counselors typically conduct Staff Assistance Visits, Status of Training Briefings and OJT and upgrade training updates. They also offer refresher courses in math, English and study skills, as well as administer CLEP, DANTES, SAT, ACT, CDC and various other tests by appointment only.

You can also earn associate degrees on base through the Community College of the Air Force, Clovis Community College, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and Wayland Baptist University. As far as baccalaureate degrees on base, ERAU (Professional Aeronautics and Technical Management) offers safety certificates at both undergraduate and graduate levels. WBU offers degrees in management, business administration, human services (criminal justice), elementary education and various technical specializations.

Off base, Eastern New Mexico University in Portales offers a wide range of baccalaureate and master's degrees, even an MBA program through interactive television. ERAU also has master's degree programs, including a Master of Aeronautical Science. WBU features a trio of master's degrees in management, business administration and education, as well as a teacher certification program.

Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Be sure to make reservations for hourly care up to two weeks in advance.

Both centers care for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age, and are accredited by National Association for the Education of Young Children. The staff gears activities to the individual needs of each child and serves nutritious and appealing breakfasts, lunches and snacks.

The Cannon center offers the Give Parents a Break Program, sponsored by the Air Force Aid Society, to spouses of deployed members and families experiencing stress or hardship due to the overwhelming responsibilities of parenting. Parents can also participate in monthly parent involvement activities or become members of the Parent Advisory Committee.

If you need a sitter for the weekend or evening, pick up a babysitter roster at either CDC or the Youth Center. These teens have completed the Babysitter's Course, which trains them in infant CPR and First Aid.

When the centers complete renovations by summer 2011, Chavez capacity will increase from 130 to 168 children, and Cannon from 130 to 158 children.

The program trains and supervises spouses to offer child care in their on-base home-up to six children, including their own. The staff also inspects these homes at least monthly to ensure consistent high-quality care. An extensive lending library, with safety equipment, toys, books and furniture, also allows licensed providers to begin their businesses with minimal start-up costs.

Extended Duty Child Care is offered free to all parents on extended duty hours (weeknights and weekends) for exercises or special assignments that require more than their usual 50-hours of child care per week. Prior authorization required.

The center is open six days a week for kids and teenagers ages 5 through 18. Programs typically involve tweens (9 to 12 year olds), teens (13 to 18 year olds), youth sports, instructional classes, and before- and after-school care.

The center offers this nationally accredited by the National School Age Care Alliance program during the school year, school vacations and summer break so kids can explore new friendships, develop new skills and participate in a variety of clubs.

Activities throughout the year include the Torch Club, Youth Leadership Council, photography or fine arts competitions, lock-ins, and such specialty clubs as Junior Youth of the Year, Theater Arts or various 4-H programs. These and other programs help teens to:

FITNESS AND SPORTS

The certified and professional personal trainers offer a "state-of-the-art cardio theater" with wireless recumbent bikes, upright bikes, treadmills and cross-trainers, a weight room, saunas and more than 20 group exercise classes per week. The 50,051-square-foot structure has basketball courts, racquetball and badminton courts, as well as outdoor basketball and track facilities around the base. As far as physical challenges, the center's year-round athletic programs feature many Wing 5-K runs and the annual Gate to Gate Run-a 5.5-mile course that starts at the Portales gate, winds through the installation and ends at Memorial Park. Other competitive activities involve base squadrons vying for base championship titles in softball, volleyball, indoor soccer, flag football and basketball, and clinics for sports officials.

Cannon's 16-lane bowling center features automatic scoring, AMF pin-setting machines, automatic bumpers for kids age 3 and up, locker and shoe rentals, a snack bar and a pro shop. Items unavailable in the pro shop can be special-ordered. The center's also USBC sanctioned for league play, uses computerized scoring, and year-round leagues include youth, intramural, spouses and couples. Other activities: Family Bowl-a-Rama nights, Turkey Shoot and Annual Family New Year's Party tournaments, Rent-the-house parties, Sunday Rent-a-lane program and birthday parties. The snack bar opens at 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The varied menu at reasonable prices includes burgers, wraps, meals and beverages for lunch and dinner at reasonable prices. If you're in a hurry, you can also call in your lunch and dinner orders.

AUTO TECHS
AUTO SKILLS CENTER

This auto mechanic's dream features 10 bays and lift racks, a steam cleaner, a tire changer, a wheel alignment machine and an abundance of U.S. and metric tools. As part of the base's Skills Development Program, center personnel offer classes and keep repair manuals on hand to help customers learn and perform all types of maintenance on their cars, from a minor tune-up to a complete engine overhaul. The staff also supervises a three-stall car wash, an outside storage compound and a vehicle resale lot to display any vehicles for sale.

Cannon has three community centers: Clovis, Portales and on base. The Cyber Café in the on-base center features computers to surf the web, check email or complete homework, a TV/movie room and a reading room. This center also plays host to several base-wide activities such as private parties, concerts, teen talent contests and a variety of other competitions and tournaments. Instructional classes include karate, cake decorating, flower arranging and scrap booking.

EQUIPMENT CHECKOUT
This service offers such low-cost rentals of camping and sports equipment as coolers, camp stoves, sleeping bags, tents, pop-up campers, fishing boats, canoes and trailers. Other outdoor gear includes volleyballs, racquets, horseshoes, badminton and croquet sets, ski, family pontoon and bass boats as well as an assortment of inflatable bouncy toys for birthday parties or special events. Also register for boating certification and training or reserve Unity Park and Doc Stewart Park for special functions.
