The 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum is one of the largest organizational museums in the Army system with nearly 4,000 objects in its collection—uniforms worn by Sgt. Alvin C. York, Maj. Gen. William Lee (the father of America’s airborne forces) Col. Reuben Tucker and Gen. James Gavin. The museum features hundreds of helmets, uniforms, ordnance items and weapons and other equipment of American and foreign origin. The museum park includes stands, a variety of aircraft, including C-47, C-46, C-119 and C-123. Assorted artillery is on display, including a French 75mm and a German 150mm gun captured in Normandy. The museum has been at its current location on Ardennes Street since 1957, but has continued to grow over the years, thanks to the support of the men and women of the Division and the public, as well as the 82nd Airborne Division Association and the Division’s historical society. Conveniently located within easy driving distance of Fayetteville and U.S. Interstate 95, the museum hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year. Beyond the displays of historical objects, the museum maintains a small reference library. Books, documents, photographs and other materials are available for use by serious researchers interested in the Division’s history. The museum is open to the public. Audiovisual programs dealing with the Division’s history and aspects of U.S. Army history are offered daily. The museum and its other programs are free and group tours are welcome. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and federal holidays, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday and opened on holidays except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
