Established at Fort Gordon in 2005, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Gordon Campus, is one of five CGSC campuses conducting the 15-week Intermediate Level Education (ILE) Common Core Course. CGSC’s main campus is at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where it has operated since 1881. CGSC operates satellite campuses at Fort Belvoir, Va.; Fort Lee, Va.; Redstone Arsenal, Ala.; and Fort Gordon. The Fort Gordon CGSC campus is co-located in Cobb Hall with the Cyber College. All Army field grade officers must complete ILE to be considered educationally qualified for advancement. CGSC Fort Gordon conducts the CGSC Common Core Course, a 15-week resident, graduate-level, academic program featuring small-group seminars led by resident CGSC faculty. Each class consists of 64 mid-career officers, divided into four staff groups of 16 students each (15 Regular Army and 1 Reserve component officer per staff group). Students come to Fort Gordon from all over the world and represent all Army branches, specialties, and functional areas. They study Leadership, History, National Security Strategy, Operational Strategy and Planning, Joint Doctrine, Army Doctrine and Tactics, Logistics, Resource Management, and Force Management. Fort Gordon graduates three classes each year. Graduates receive up to 15 graduate credit hours from the University of Maryland and other universities and receive Joint Professional Military Education One (JPME 1) credit. Many Fort Gordon students attend civilian graduate programs or military functional area specialty programs in addition to the CGSC Common Core Course to complete their Intermediate Level Education. CGSC is the last formal military education for most Army officers; a select few will attend one of the Senior Service Colleges, such as the Army War College, later in their careers.
