Whether this is your first time coming to Fort Hood or you’re coming back for another tour, welcome “home” to the Great Place.
We call this the Great Place, not based on size (although it is huge) nor the immensity of the missions we support in defense of the nation. No, Fort Hood is the Great Place because of the servicemen and servicewomen, Department of Army civilians, contract employees and all their Families who live and work at Fort Hood.
It’s the people who make Fort Hood great inside its gates and off the installation in our surrounding communities. Together, we are an Army Family numbering in the hundreds of thousands.
With so many organizations, so many missions and so many programs available to assist the Fort Hood military community, this guidebook is one way to reach out to newcomers to the Great Place, as well as provide a resource guide for the post. The installation has many other means of communicating with its military community, including the post’s free weekly newspaper, the Fort Hood Sentinel, which is published 50 weeks annually with a circulation of 25,000. In addition, the newspaper’s website draws hundreds of thousands of hits annually to its site, www.forthoodsentinel.com.
The Internet and social media play a big role in the post’s efforts to connect to its community. The Fort Hood homepage hosts a wealth of information and drop-down menus that can be navigated with ease. The homepage is at www.hood.army.mil. Fort Hood also uses social media to reach out to its military community. The post’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/forthood, has tens of thousands of followers. All are encouraged to add the page to their daily newsfeed.
To stay on top of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation activities, pick up a free copy of its monthly magazine, Hood Happenings, or go to www.hoodmwr.com for updated information. Go online to our many internet options, or simply pick up a free copy of the Fort Hood Sentinel or Hood Happenings to stay in touch with what’s new in our military community.
Finally, there is a mobile application of this guidebook, placing all the information located within these pages in the palm of your hand on your smart phone or mobile device. Go to the App Store on your mobile device and download the MyBaseGuide application. Once you have the app, choose Fort Hood as your location, and you have this guidebook anywhere you go. For more details about the guidebook, maps and the mobile application, go to www.mybaseguide.com.
Fort Hood truly is great, and it is the aim of this guidebook to assist you in finding everything the Great Place has to offer, as well as highlight our neighboring communities, which remain steadfast in their support of our troops and their Families.
Again, welcome home.
