Anniston Army Depot is a U.S. Army maintenance center and munitions storage site. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northeast Alabama, the depot occupies more than 25 square miles of land. The installation has more than 15,000 acres of woodland; 3.5 million square feet of maintenance and production buildings; 419,029 square feet of administrative buildings; and 6.8 million square feet of storage buildings. The depot has approximately 3,800 employees.

From its origin in the early 1940s as a storage depot, Anniston Army Depot has transformed into a state-of-the-market maintenance facility and is most often recognized for its heavy combat vehicle, small arms weaponry and locomotive expertise. The depot is the Department of Defense’s Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for tracked and wheeled ground combat vehicles (minus the Bradley); towed and self-propelled artillery; assault bridging systems; individual and crew served small caliber weapons; and locomotives, rail equipment and non-tactical generators.

Anniston Army Depot performs depot-level maintenance on vehicle systems such as the M1 Abrams tank, M88 Recovery Vehicle, Stryker, M113 M9 Ace Combat Earthmover and Assault Breacher Vehicle. Major components of each vehicle are also overhauled and returned to stock.

Depot personnel are deployed around the world in direct support of our nation’s war fighters providing fielding services and repairs in the field. Combat and battle damage repairs are accomplished both at home and abroad.

Under partnership agreements, a wide range of vehicle conversions, upgrades and new vehicle manufacturing are currently underway. Additionally, worldwide distribution of stocks and the maintenance and storage of conventional ammunition and missiles are significant parts of the depot’s overall missions and capabilities. The Department of Defense’s only missile recycling center is located at Anniston.

Key tenant organizations on the depot include Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Anniston, the Anniston Munitions Center and the Museum Support Center Anniston.
