Birch Lake

For outdoor enjoyment, military members and their families can take advantage of the Birch Lake Recreation Area, 35 miles south of Eielson along the Richardson Highway. The camp is nestled in wilderness on the shore of Birch Lake, which is brimming with rainbow trout and Arctic char. Cabins, camper pads, tent spots, picnic area, boats, canoes and a lodge are available. Activities include boating, canoeing, water skiing, fishing, berry picking, wading and barbecuing. Don’t forget your camera — you’re likely to see wildlife including moose, fox, beaver, a wide variety of waterfowl and an occasional eagle. Although camping is limited to the summer months, the rest of the area is open year-round, with winter cabin rental and activity programs. Valdez

Valdez is 341 miles south of Eielson on the north shore of Port Valdez, a deepwater fjord in Prince William Sound. Valdez offers great fishing and hiking and has terrific potential for whale sightings. It is the last stop of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. Eielson has eight camping trailer sites equipped with electrical power and water at Eagles Rest Campground. Five “you drive” boats are available for rent for fishing and sightseeing. Iceman Falls Ski Hill & Lodge

Outdoor Adventure programs and winter equipment checkout can be found at Iceman Falls Lodge on base. The lodge has cross-country ski trails, a sled hill, ski hill and lift, and an ice rink. Winter snow-lovers may schedule snowmobile tours or ice fishing outings with the outdoor adventure crew. The lodge is located at the end of Quarry Road in Building 6395 (1377 Ski Lodge Road). Skeet and Trap

The skeet and trap range lies at the end of Quarry Road, near the Iceman Falls Ski Hill & Lodge. The two ranges are equipped with a high house, a low house and five-stand for skeet shooting, and also offer a trap house. There are eight positions for trap and five positions for skeet. Patrons may rent 12-gauge shotguns; shotgun shells are available for purchase. Call 907-377-5338 for more information.

Golf

There are two high-tech golf simulators available at the Community Center. Call 907-377-2642/3212 for reservations or additional information. The nearest military golf course is Chena Bend Golf Course on Fort Wainwright, about 25 miles from Eielson toward Fairbanks. There are also two public courses in the area, although play is usually limited to June, July and August. Call 907-353-6223 for more information.

Bear Lake Family Camp

Eielson’s Bear Lake Family Camp, located on base, is open May 15 through Labor Day. This exciting camping area offers 41 camper pads and eight tent sites. Amenities include showers, bathrooms, laundry facilities, canoe rental and an on-site dump station. Equipment Checkout

Rental equipment is available for most recreational needs year-round, including camping, hunting, boating, fishing, barbecues, cross-country skiing, sledding, bicycling and more. Fitness and Sports Center

Wallyball and racquetball courts, exercise rooms, a steam room, saunas, weight rooms, massage therapy, locker rooms, a basketball court, an indoor swimming pool, a volleyball court, an indoor football field, an indoor running track and an athletic equipment checkout center are all part of the coed fitness complex. Intramural sports consist of basketball, golf, softball, racquetball, tennis, flag football and volleyball. Instructional classes are offered in aerobics, Pilates, weight training and boot camp. Known as Baker Field House, the fitness and sports center is located in Building 3343 and is open from 4:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. holidays and down days. Clubs

The 354th Force Support Squadron operates two club facilities: the MiG Alley Bar and Club 354 Sportsbar Enlisted Lounge. The MiG Alley Bar is in the Aurora Events Center, Building 5223 (2584 Coman Ave.), and Club 354 Sportsbar Enlisted Lounge is in the Yukon Club, Building 2225 (2450 Central Ave.). The enlisted lounge has televisions arranged in sports-bar fashion, a dance floor and pool tables. It offers regularly scheduled programs and entertainment such as First Friday, DJs, dance music and Texas Hold ’em. Bowling

Arctic Nite Lanes is a 20-lane bowling center with automatic scoring open to both league and nonleague bowlers. The center also has a snack bar and pro shop. Thunder Alley — glow-in-the-dark bowling with a state-of-the-art light show and stereo sound system — is available most weekends and for private parties by prior arrangement. Children’s birthday party packages are offered. The snack bar is open Monday through Sunday. The grill closes a half-hour prior to the snack bar’s closing. Skate Park

The youth center has an adjacent outdoor skate park that is open for skateboard use and inline skating and features several rails, quarter pipes and a half pipe. Helmets and safety pads are required. Some safety gear is available for checkout. Call 907-377-3194 for more information.

Arts & Crafts

This multicrafts center provides organized creative skills development activities in Building 3335 (2540 Central Ave.), next to the commissary. Classes are scheduled in response to base population interests and instructors are sought from the community. People with custom handicrafts are encouraged to display work for sale through the consignment program. The award shop offers custom graphic work and engraving on plaques, trophies, shirts, cups, gold pans and Alaska treasures. The custom frame shop can frame most flat work at a fraction of off-base costs. The center offers monthly specials, UPS services (drop-off only) and balloon bouquets. Information, Tickets & Travel

Information, Tickets & Travel (ITT) offers discount tickets for movies, sporting events and local attractions such as the Riverboat Discovery, gold panning and the Alaska Salmon Bake. ITT is in the Arts & Crafts Center, Building 3335 (2540 Central Ave.). Call 907-377-2722 for more information.

Auto Skills Center

Self-directed automotive work with skilled technicians to provide guidance is highlighted at the Auto Skills Center in Building 3360 (2611 Arctic Ave.). Sixteen auto stalls are available and include three lifts and a welding stall. Workstations are equipped with toolboxes, and specialty tools can be checked out. A number of computerized diagnostic services are also available. During winter months, the center provides a stall with a water hose for car washing, but users must bring their own supplies. Wood Skills Center

The wood skills center is a self-directed activity in Building 3360 (2611 Arctic Ave.). Equipment is available for use on projects during normal hours of operation. A certification card is required. Sign up at the Auto Skills front desk. Call 907-377-1168/3190 for more information.
