Little Rock Air Force Base is in many respects a self-contained community centered around the mission of training C-130 aircrews and operating the aircraft on far-flung missions around the world. But since nobody can spend all of their time at work, there are many more varied activities and facilities, something probably of interest to almost everyone.

Extended Duty Child Care
The EDC Initiative is to enable families to obtain free high-quality childcare from licensed or affiliated providers at or near their base when weekly parental workloads due to longer duty hours exceed their typical 50-hour childcare arrangements that they are already purchasing. When parents' routine childcare plan for short-term TDYs, shift work, family days or deployments fail, the EDC Initiative is available for "child care emergencies." To be eligible for this program, at least one parent must be a member of the U.S. Military Service: Active Duty; dual employed (military married to civilian) or DoD civilian employee assigned to or working on the installation. The FCC program is the approval authority, and its coordinator screens, trains, monitors homes and conducts unannounced inspections. First priority is given to parents whose children are currently enrolled in the Air Force Child Development, School-age and/or FCC program and have completed all appropriate forms. For more information, call (501) 987-3156 or 7162.
Extended Duty Care can be used for:
• On-base mission related duty
• Extended duty days
• Temporary shift changes (not to exceed three days)
• Rapid mobilization
• Dual military or single parent deployment until children are picked up by AF Form 357 designee (not to exceed three days)
• No notice/short-notice TDY

• If verified with supervisor
• Provides temporary assistance (not to exceed three days per calendar year) until other arrangements can be found.
• Spouse of deployed or TDY member who is experiencing a short-term child-care emergency created in part by the duty-related absence of spouse (not to exceed three days).
• Requests to exceed the three-day time limit are sent to the MAJCOM in advance for approval. Confirmation of approval is sent from the MAJCOM to Flight Chief, FCC Coordinator, and HQ USAF simultaneously.
Extended Duty Care cannot be used:
• On a regular, recurring basis
• To meet parents' regular child care requirements
• To provide shift work care where shift work is a typical assignment.
• Mandatory PT • To provide hourly care for non-duty-related reasons • For off-duty education and employment on a recurring basis.
• For holidays, family days, CDC/SAP/FCC home closure, attend/watch air shows, etc.
• FCC providers that have medical appointments, child care emergencies that impact on their ability to provide child care or need substitute care (Exception: Approved by MAJCOM and if EDC Provider has unused hours).
• Child Development and School-Age staff required to work different shift, longer hours and who have other child care emergencies that impact on their ability to provide child care (Exception: Approved by MAJCOM and if EDC Provider has unused hours).
• Family Member Program staff and FCC provider training (Exception: Approved by MAJCOM and if EDC Provider has unused hours - this is allowed on an extremely limited basis).
Child Care for Volunteers
Recognizing the importance of volunteers to the base community, the AFAS provides funding for the Child Care for Volunteers program at selected bases. The AFAS will provide up to $1,000 per month to pay child care expenses in AF licensed or affiliated FCC homes for volunteers who are engaged in supporting programs which benefit the AF community. It should be noted that this program is not meant to pay for child care for volunteers in resale (Thrift Shop), fund raising, or social activities.
Returning Home Family Child Care
When the Air Force is engaged overseas, members who return from duty are granted 16 hours of free child care per child, allowing them to spend time with spouses and catch up on family duties. People must have been deployed on an OEF deployment or in support of contingency operations for more than 30 calendar days to be eligible, and the care must be used within 30 days of returning from deployment. This care is offered in a licensed Family Child Care home on a space-available basis. For more information, call (501) 987-3156.
Child Care for PCS
The Child Care for PCS Program is intended to help relieve some of the stress felt by families in the process of a PCS move. The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) will pay up to 20 hours of child care per child in licensed FCC homes on base or in AF affiliated homes off base. Air Force families with PCS orders can obtain a Child Care for PCS Certificate at the base Relocation Office in the Family Support Center. Families can receive a certificate at both the base from which they are departing and at their new base. Certificates are good only at the base at which they are issued; unused hours do not transfer from one base to another. Families may use the 20 hours of child care within 60 days before the family's departure from a base, and 60 days after arriving at the new base. This program is open to all ranks unless there is a shortage of child care providers at the bas, in which case priority would be given to junior ranking personnel.

Symbols for the Folds of the Flag
• First fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
• Second fold is a symbol of our belief in the eternal life.
• Third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
• Fourth fold represents our weaker nature; for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance.
• Fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong."
• Sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our hearts that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
• Seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
• Eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.
• Ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
• Tenth fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.
• Eleventh fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
• Twelfth fold, in the eyes of Christian citizens, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.
• When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God We Trust." After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today.
